Griffith-Lendering, M., Huijbregts, S., Huizink, A., Ormel, H., Verhulst, F., Vollebergh, W., & Swaab, H. (2011). Social Skills as Precursors of Cannabis Use in Young Adolescents: A Trails Study. Journal of Clinical Child & Adolescent Psychology, 40(5), 706-714. doi:10.180/15374416.2011.597085 This study looks to find a link between social skills and young adolescent usage of cannabis. Previous research compiled by Griffith-Lendering, Huijbregts, Huizink, Ormel, Verhulst, Vollebergh and Swaab (2011) shows cannabis is one of the most widely used substances, with frequent occurrence among young adults. Cannabis usage during this developmental time is linked to educational problems, increased use of other illegal drugs and deviant behavior. Other factors that lead to increased use of cannabis include low socioeconomic status, poor academic performance, early usage of tobacco and alcohol, family problems, and externalized behavior. Studying precursors of cannabis use is important to preventing not only cannabis use, but also the use of other illegal drugs. …show more content…
Griffith-Lendering et al. (2011) theorized that cooperation and self-control skills would relate to a reduction in cannabis use as well as defiant behavior. It was also hypothesized that inadequate social skills would be associated with early onset and excessive usage of cannabis. Excessive usage is defined as forty or more times a year while regular usage is defined as three to thirty-nine times per year. Individuals who only used cannabis once or twice in the last year were defined as experimental
Research has found that teenagers who used cigarettes were twelve times more likely to graduate to marijuana use. A similar study conducted by Denise Kandel (1992) revealed that use of marijuana affects dopamine levels in the brain in a similar way to nicotine. Cigarette smoking facilitates consumption of other substances. Smoking cigarettes initiate juveniles into the sensation of drug inhalation, which desensitizes them from the feeling of smoke clouding their lungs. This paper finds that marijuana pervades the life of a juvenile tobacco smoker. Teenagers who smoke cigarettes
In this article, whether or not prenatal marijuana exposure (PME) contributes to marijuana use at age fourteen is studied. Over the years the use of marijuana and its effects on adolescents has increased. There have been attempts to prevent the use of marijuana among adolescents, but in order to prevent something you have to know the reason for the occurrence. “Among preteens and adolescents, PME predicted poorer performance on tests of memory, attention, and executive functioning” (Day, Goldschmidt & Thomas, 2006). In addition to PME, factors such as: child management practices,
Marijuana addiction can negatively impact our children’s minds, body, relationships to others and future opportunities. Thus, their wellbeing and ability to function normally are obstructed by inducing mental aggressions and fatigue due to sleep deprivation. Teenagers choose to smoke marijuana out of sheer curiosity, peer pressure and the desire to fit in with friends. Adolescents have the perception that marijuana can help them to cope with anxiety, boredom, anger issues or unpleasant feelings
The University of Michigan “annually survey in 2010 ” identified that adolescents nationwide, will start using drugs from 8, 10, and 12-grade use drugs, which include alcohol, Tabaco, marijuana, and other drugs; the survey shows the increased of marijuana use among high school seniors to daily basis. Consumption is the highest in comparison with the previous study nearly 65% of those students use marijuana as their primary drug of choice.
Within Friese and Grube, they state that Marijuana is the most commonly used drug among teens in the US and with the access to medical marijuana, teens have only increased their use (34). Research also argues that with legalization, recreational use would suggest to adolescents that marijuana is safe and normal (Friese and Grube 34). This finding suggests teen use might increase (Friese and Grube 34). Therefore, since research shows a defeat in executive functioning and processing with use of cannabis (Battistella et al.), it is essential that adolescences decrease their use since the teen brain is still maturing (Crean et al. 5). As well, there is evidence that teenagers who use cannabis in early years have more significant cognitive problems than their peers (Crean et al. 2). Furthermore, in Friese and Grube findings, they argue that a typical drug free environment is crucial for teens’ development (37) since an environment with accessible marijuana will encourage marijuana use and increase risks of negative consequences in their adulthood and health (Friese and Grube 33). Therefore, legalizing the recreational use of cannabis could potentially have a large harmful effect on
Despite all of the efforts put fourth in attempting to better educate and stop drug use in America studies show that drug use by juveniles has substantially increased within recent years. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) juveniles as young as eighth grade are using drugs such as marijuana on a daily basis. Unfortunately, most of these juveniles have also experimented with alcohol at this age as a gateway drug to start using marijuana and so forth. (NIDA) There are many aspects that could impact why children so young are getting access to these drugs. The NIDA Director Dr. Nora Volkow states that, “Marijuana use not only places teens at risk of addiction but also impairs their memory, judgment, and ability to learn.” These drugs are now so easily accessible at such a vulnerable and impressionable age that it could have devastating impacts on the juvenile’s future in the criminal justice system. Important factors that go alongside in drug abuse with juveniles would be peer pressure, family factors, and lastly emotional problems they are experiencing in their young years of life.
Compared to meth and crystal meth use, rates of cannabis use among adolescent students are typically high (Bouchard et al., 2011). In the mid to late 2000s, the Canadian illicit drug market has generally remained stable (NIA et al., 2010). National Intelligence Analysis et al. (2010) contend that cannabis remained to be the most popular illicit
“The earlier marijuana use begins and the heavier it becomes, the stronger the tendency to use other drugs is” (Effects of marijuana on youth 2). For instance, it introduces that among high school seniors who use marijuana daily, four times as many report daily alcohol consumption; twice as many report daily tobacco use. People don’t realize how dangerous marijuana can be; when they smoke it, they don’t think about the future consequences but only of the momentaneous pleasure it gives
The most imperative piece of this data is to demonstrate the threat of cannabis utilizing high schoolers to keep guardians from enabling this to influence their youngsters and to give familiarity with these risks if marijuana is sanctioned. Our data ought to likewise introduce the contrary encounters that a few people understanding while affected by cannabis. We plan to utilize our give in the least expensive
Because of this they will look to smoke and use despite the stated harmful effects upon social functioning. This will lead to marijuana addiction from the abuse of the drug which causes the brain to adapt from taking large amounts of the drug. Users then believe they can stop whenever they want but in reality this is not true dependency can occur and you may not even notice it. It is shocking that people who start using marijuana before the age of 18 are 4 to 7 times more likely to develop a marijuana use disorder than adults. This is most likely due to peer pressure and the attempt to do the cool thing that everyone else is doing. Some that have tried to quit smoking marijuana have come to be effected by irritability, mood and sleep difficulties, decreased appetite, cravings, and restlessness within quitting (“Marijuana Addiction…”).
Even though it is illegal if the drug abusers have not been caught they will continue to use the drug and use others. Many adolescences experiment with marijuana due to curiosity and peer pressure studies have shown that the use of marijuana at a young age causes the adolescences to want to try more dangerous narcotics such as cocaine and heroin. An article titled “Evidence That Marijuana Is a Gateway to other Illicit Drug Use” by Joseph Gfoerer, Li-Tzy Wu, and Michael Penne states that, “the highest prevalence of use of heroin, cocaine, and psychotherapeutics in the lifetime was noted among those who initiated marijuana before they were 15 years old. With many young people trying strong narcotics illegally it is no surprise that other young people will also become more apt to try these heavier drugs. The article, “Marijuana is a Dangerous Drug for Teens” by Joseph Calfifano discuses why marijuana is so dangerous for teens and how the gateway effect plays part in this problem. The article states that marijuana use is a “signal of trouble”, the troubles include lack of growth, focus, and motor skills. He also brings up the gateway effect in the article the statistics he uses include, “Twelve to seventeen year olds who smoke marijuana are eighty five times more likely to use cocaine than those who would not.” These statists are very strong in
This paper will emphasize the necessity of school-based drug use prevention programs by supporting the psychological growth and understanding of the harmful effects of drug abuse. Forming healthy parent-child relations, external social determinants, and the neurobiological imbalance during the developing stage of youth (Pokhrel, Herzong, Black, Zaman, Riggs, Sussman, 2013, p. 218) play key roles in the decision making processes. By reflecting on determining factors of cannabis initiation,
The topic that we will be exploring in our presentation is marijuana usage in teens, specifically high school students. We will examine previous survey results within our high school pertaining the marijuana use amongst our students. Along with this, we will also look over other high schools’ data to compare and come to a conclusion of the use among teens. We will then analyze the general trends in the past few years to explain the benefits as well as risks of smoking weed. Marijuana has become and is becoming generally accepted and in some cases legalized in our society, due to this, younger generations have easier access to the drug. That is only one factor that plays a role in this problem, the next is the mentality of the youth. Both these
The article entitled, Parental and Peer Influences on the Risk of Adolescent Drug use is about multiple studies with using a sample of adolescents from grades seventh to twelfth grade. They wanted to see how much peers and families effect the drug use of adolescents. In these studies, they found that peers and families have very strong effect on adolescents on drug use. There are many different factors that can affect adolescent from using drugs such as Parents attitudes on drugs, if an older brother or sister that uses drugs, friends that uses drugs and adult drug use. They have found ways that can help prevent adolescent drug use by parents watching their kids more often (parental monitoring), and also how closely attached they are to their children which means how much they spend time with them such as doing activities together or spending quality time as a whole family. In this article the reason why they did this research is see how peers and family effects on drug use is to have parents be more aware how much they themselves can influence their kids from doing drugs. Parental drug attitudes are how parents feel about their child from doing drugs Research in this article suggest that how their parents attitudes about drugs will determine how much their child will do it, for example if parents don’t want their child to drink alcohol and they told them not to ever use numerous of times then the son or daughter have a lower
Alcohol and marijuana are both depressants and the use is a growing concern in today’s youth by parents, educators, and medical professionals. Cannabis is the most common illicit drug used by adolescence, while alcohol is the leading cause of death in the adolescent years. American society frowns upon the use of any illicit drugs at any age, while alcohol is restricted under 21 because both substances interfere with the memory and learning in the critical learning period. Marijuana is illegal, therefore, being caught with cannabis is much worse than being caught with alcohol while underage. Marijuana also tends to leave a strong odor, which can easily draw attention to authorities. Many teens tend to think that alcohol use has more consequences than marijuana use and therefore view marijuana use as safer than drinking. The decline in teens’ perception of marijuana’s harmfulness could be linked to an increase in medical marijuana dispensaries and the ongoing debate about the medical benefits and legalization of marijuana. Also, in multiple forms of media, the consumption of alcohol is portrayed more often than references of illicit drugs. For example, of the top 200 popular films, 93% portrayed alcohol consumption while 22%referenced illicit drugs.
