In the novel Persepolis, the true story of a childhood written by narrated by a young child allows the reader to be able to relate and feel the pain the main character Marji goes through and be open minded to the culture differences marji goes through. Marji also experiences a series of ups and down in early childhood years. also, late on in her teenage years when she is trying to find her voice while also being in a country where she is in bondage having to Obaid by the ridiculous laws set in place by the shah enabling her to be a “normal teenager”. it is not only her that is trying to survive in this dictatorship. her parents are try maintain the somewhat normal life style which wasn’t easy at all to accomplish because in 1970 Iran was going through a political change and an Iranian revolution that changed the whole dynamic of life, culture and education.

Everyone is molded through their experiences, memories, and surroundings. It is these that make who you are. The novel ”Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, is about how the events the author experienced as a child heavily influences her identity. Marjane grows up in Iran during a very hard time; the Islamic Revolution. She has to deal with the contrasting ideas between the government and her parents. This novel shows Marjane Satrapi reflecting her identity through her parents, her loss of innocence, and of her environment; ultimately, showing how Marjane’s is very impressionable.
The conflict in Persepolis is shown through the changes that are caused between families, women and children when fundamentalist Islamic state takes over Iran. The story progresses though the main character, Marjane’s point of view and experience.
In Marjane Satrapi’s memoir Persepolis published in 2003, Marji is a young girl living with her family in Iran during the Islamic revolution. Marji’s family is living under the strict control of the government that limit her freedoms as a human and also as a girl. Trauma forces a loss of innocence, which causes children grow up before their time.

In Persepolis, because Marji is young she grew from being an ignorant person to learning and understanding the situations that occurred around her. In the beginning when Marji was young she was an ignorant person. She didn’t understand and lacked knowledge about what was really going on in the demonstrations. In chapter two page 17 panel 4 her father said, “You can participate later on.”
Amazing, intriguing, and unimaginable are just a few words to describe how I felt about Persepolis while I read this true life story of Marjane Satrapi. This book has helped me to see all the life struggles, good times, and adversities that Marji faced between the ages of nine to thirteen. The Islamic Revolution had such a daunting effect in the Middle East, especially in the county of Iran where Marji and her family resided.
Marjane Satrapi is a hopeful, inspiring, and an intelligent author. In writing Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood, she had many goals and dreams including informing the public that Iran as a nation experiences rocky times like every other country. In addition, Iran is not just a place where extremists live; there are children going through the same things as children in other countries. Unlike children in some countries, Marji’s childhood was overshadowed by protests and the revolution and its reforms. Many children, especially Americans are not exposed to the hardships of life like Marji and other children in Iran.
People grow up in different way, affected by many different things as they grow and mature, during the process people change perspectives and ideals. In the book "Persepolis" by Marjane Satrapi, a middle eastern girl who is coming of age, finds that her environment changes her as the country that she is in goes through an unstable violent state. Losing a loved one affects everyone differently. Some people may not fell any emotions, but others may feel like a lot of emotions like Marjane. Marjane is the main character in Persepolis. She lost her uncle Anoosh was a very strong man, they had a good bond with each other.

Marji Satrapi was impacted by all the women in her life that were courageous and those who supported the regime's oppressive measures. Marjane's mother, Taji, was perceived as a victim of the gender inequality present in Iran. She represents the progressive Iranian woman who wanted their opinions to be heard. She has her own opinions and her family lifestyle changes what she believes and thinks about all three of these topics.
