The intention of this piece is to inform the reader of the recent happenings involving Mark Halsey and how his situation raises the bigger question of the introduction of video assistant referees in top flight football. Targeted for football fans who follow high level football.
In the past couple of days, the footballing world has been rocked by the claims of Mark Halsey, an ex-English Premier League referee. He claims to have been told to make specific decisions about incidents which have occurred during a match. If his statement has any shred of truth, the footballing world has a very scary problem on their hands. On September 2nd, in reply to a tweet Mark Halsey admitted to having seen an incident and been told by an official of the

Other sports such as rugby and tennis use different types of video assistance in their respective sports to help out the officials. There is only so much a human eye can see and when an official is tired or has an obstructed view, decisions can be made incorrectly. This is when video referees can come in and help. The could allow for a replay to show them what the best decision to be made is. So many forms of VA can be used, perhaps the captains of each team get a limited amount of challenges to the referee’s decision, or the referee can choose when to look at the video. Set rules like all penalties or red cards have to be reviewed by the assistant is another idea being thrown around. The English Football Association are finally beginning experiments with video referees in this season FA cup. Referees will have a tablet available for them to view Instant replays of the game, similar to the TMO for tries in Rugby. Currently, there are too many what ifs in Football, from amateur level to the international stage, it is unprofessional and not the right move to keep VA from the sport. One can only begin to imagine the amount of decisions that will be overruled and the countless decisions that could’ve been corrected if this technology had been tried and tested all those numbers of years
However, Phillips’s essay focuses more on the negative aspects of football and does contain some logical fallacies. The one main logical fallacy in this essay is overgeneralization. Phillips’ essay briefly over generalizes the attitudes of football players. In his essay, Phillips talks about the abusive actions of Incognito and describes how all football players are similar to Incognito. He categorizes all football players as being physical and tough, and not being afraid to fight.
“I am here to start a fight, because I’m a man and that’s how I solve problems” (Phillips) The main argument presented in Brian Phillips’s essay “Man Up” is what ‘being a man’ means in the football world. In football, being a man means dealing with your problems and not being afraid to fight back physically. Phillips says that football players put on this tough guy act on the field, they fight like real men, and do not run from their problems. In this essay, Phillips argues against this idea of toughness by redefining it. All aspects of football, not just the player, but the networks and the fans treat football as a man’s sport. Phillips addresses mental/emotional issues as a problem in football by describing the abusive relationship between Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin. Since football is a man's sport, emotional issues are just unacceptable, but Phillips challenges this idea.

Steve Almond’s story “You Knock my Brains out This Sunday and I Knock Your Brains out the Next Time we Meet” speaks to the underlying truth about America’s Sunday pastime and how concussions can be prevented not only by the industry, but by its viewers as well. Football is well known after having been brought to the public’s eye as study after study was released proving that there was a link from football to head injuries. Although in our modern society we have already subconsciously made the connection between football and concussions. The fact that this problem is not decreasing, could be surprising, as the lack of understanding about who has control and the ability to influence change. We hear that football helmets and pads, are getting better, but that does not stop concussions. We do not hear how helmets make players feel and change their play style based on the feeling of invincibility that people feel while wearing a helmet. Pads and helmets do help protect the players but false senses of security due to lack of knowledge on what
Mark Watney, Ares 3’s botanist, is left behind on Mars after his crew thought he was dead. Watney will have to survive on Mars until help arrives. Watney first calculates that he needs more food even though he is rationing his food. He decides to grow the raw potatoes that were originally for Thanksgiving. He first gets the dirt, and turns Martian soil into fertile dirt by populating the soil with bacteria. Then, he plants the potatoes. That way he can have more food. He is also making water out of hydrazine, which comes from leftover rocket fuel. On earth, satellite images show that Watney is still alive, and they start to find to help him. Watney then sets out on a journey to find Pathfinder, a Martian rover that lost communication with Earth
In the NFL they use sensors in helmets to spot concussions, so an author has a solution to the risk of concussions and that is “Riddell’s Head Impact Telemetry System or HITS” (Kliegman). The only problem about the HITS system is the price. The HITS system costs around $60,000 to implement. However schools have more important things to do with $60,000 like pay for new books, computers, equipment for teachers. Although It does cost around a low end house. Although the price is a bit high the HITS is a sensor that can detect the amount of force that hit the player’s head. The device can try and scan for the hit that caused a concussion. Another type of way to monitor is different sensors as the author stated “Some sensors go inside helmets, technology is meant to flag potential concussions” (Kliegman). There are other alternatives to the HIT system. These sensors are meant to “flag potential concussions” not to prevent them. This is a way to monitor the players
The league office has taken various factors into account, as we considered enacting rule changes designed to reduce head injuries. First and foremost, we engaged in dialogue about whether any rule changes would threaten the “sole” of the sport. We came to the conclusion that these rule changes would not damage the sport, and would only legitimize it further. Secondly, we talked officials from other leagues regarding their changes in sports. Our league has experienced similar
Considering, the faith and Loyality Job had for God, he allowed Satan to torture Job. First, Satan destoryed everything in Job’s life and took the lives of his ten children. Secondly, Satan harmed Job physically, causing his health to fail. According to Maxwell, Satan infected Job with sores over the surface of his body, and Job scratched his skin with a pottery shard for relief (as cited in John C. Maxwell, 2014, p.34). Moreover, when Satan was done torturing Job. The faith and loyality Job had for God was even stronger. Job told Maxwell all of his pain, suffering and scars, Satan inflicted on him carried no pain. The only thing mattered to Job was “God see the big picture” (Maxwell, 2014, p. 34). Satan never understood the reason why Job
John Kass and Kevin Grier and Tyler Cowen are influential people that have the same opinion that football will end in the future. While they share many of the same key concepts but they have different attitudes of how the sport will end. In John Kass’s article “The End Of Football” appeals to the audience emotions through use of personal experience; however, “What Would The End Of Football Look Like” by Kevin Grier and Tyler Cowen is more persuasive through their credentials and objective.
Rules and penalties are known in advance by everyone and they are fair, consistent, and immediate. This attribute was imposed by the “referees” that were constantly walking around to make sure that the house was up to par.
It is the referee’s job to catch wrongdoing & the athletes & coaches have no inherent responsibility to follow the rules.
In 1994 the NFL adopted placing radio transmitters in helmets. Paul Brown, Head Coach of the Cleveland Browns in the 1950s, who is arguably the most remarkable coach in NFL history. He was a football genius. Coach Brown, first implemented radios into his quarterback’s helmet in 1954, which was an enormous technological advance in football. Although it was advanced, it had one substantially excessive flaw because the Cleveland Browns used Police frequencies. Otto Graham,Cleveland’s quarterback, once jogged to the sideline to declare to Coach Brown that someone had been stabbed! Despite the incident, it didn’t stop Paul Brown in forever changing the game of football. Surprisingly, the NFL adopted the technology forty years later in 1994! In 2015 the NFL changed the rules so that any coach that calls plays has a radio headset to communicate with the play caller on both sides of the ball. This change allows coaches to call in plays anytime on both offense and defense. The complexity of the game changed due to Helmet communication. Besides updating the player and coach communication, the NFL changed the rule on chop
LAW 5 - Referees- The referee makes sure that these 17 laws are followed throughout the game. In soccer when there is a foul committed then the referee can either decide to stop the game and give a free kick or let the game play on to see if the team who gains the foul receives an advantage in the play (shot on goal, goal, pass up field and other plays are considered advantages).
It is important for all those involved in sport to support and promote the principles of equity, whether they are playing, refereeing or coaching. I think that it is so important that when incidents of negative discrimination occur they are dealt with promptly. If equality is not tolerated it will cause a better learning and teaching atmosphere. Racism can be best described as negative discrimination against an individual because of their colour, racial
Sometimes a rivalry can become intensely heated and it may become violent. In the sport of soccer one of the most anticipated matches of the year is none other than Real Madrid vs Barcelona. These two teams are great teams and are the sport’s biggest rivals. Before the match is played the media heats up the rivalry by reporting that the one team is trash talking or undervaluing the other team. At first it is taken lightly as just a publicity stunt but when the players overhear the news, they get over competitive. When the match is being played there is always physical fights between players and it gets out of hand. Not one of these rival matches has passed that a player doesn’t get ejected from the game. In conclusion, this proves how the media plays a large role on the player’s mentality when going into the game and can also cause them to behave in certain ways.
