The film was all about Mark Watney’s life on Mars, and he was able to survive it. The film began with Watney’s six-member crew “Ares III” exploring the planet Mars.

One sol (Martian solar day), a dust storm attacked their area in Mars. The five members of the crew left the planet Mars immediately and ride on the Hermes, as commanded by NASA. They left Mark Watney lost in the storm, assuming that he was dead.

Mark Watney was alive, yet he was stabbed by the debris from an antenna. He performed a self-surgery for himself, and it turns out that it was successful. He began filming his own video diary about his experiences on Mars. Mark cited that the supplies in their hab was insufficient to answer his needs before the next mission crew in Mars lands. Being a botanist himself, Mr. Watney started to address his concern on the food insufficiency by building an improvised potato farm by using the soil on Mars and his fecal dirt. After the funeral service, satellite planning in-charge found on the latest satellite images from Mars that some things from the Hab were moved. Some of staff in the NASA were convinced that Watney is still alive, while some thought that the moving was fault by the wind.
