CASE 46 Making Socially Responsible and Ethical
Strategic decisions move a company toward its stated goals and perceived success. Strategic decisions also reflect the firm’s social responsibility and the ethical values on which such decisions are made. They reflect what is considered important and what a company wants to achieve. Mark Pastin, writing on the function of ethics in business decisions, observes: There are fundamental principles, or ground rules, by which organizations act. Like the ground rules of individuals, organizational ground rules determine which actions are possible for the organization and what the actions mean. Buried beneath the charts of organizational responsibility, the arcane strategies, the crunched numbers, and

In Gambia, smokers send in cigarette box tops to qualify for a chance to win a new car. In Argentina, smoking commercials fill 20 percent of television advertising time. And in crowded African cities, billboards that link smoking to the good life tower above the sweltering shantytowns. Such things as baby clothes with cigarette logos, health warnings printed in foreign languages, and tobaccosponsored contests for children are often featured in tobacco ads in Third World countries. Latin American tobacco consumption rose by more than 24 percent over a ten-year period. Critics claim that sophisticated promotions in unsophisticated societies entice people who cannot afford the necessities of life to spend money on a luxury—and a dangerous one at that. The sophistication theme runs throughout the smoking ads. In Kinshasa, Zaire, billboards depict a man in a business suit stepping out of a black Mercedes as a chauffeur holds the door. In Nigeria, promotions for Graduate brand cigarettes show a university student in his cap and gown. Those for Gold Leaf cigarettes have a barrister in a white wig and the slogan, “A very important cigarette for very important people.” In Kenya, a magazine ad for Embassy cigarettes
I would advise Shania that an LLC would be the best form of business to accomplish her goals. Shania wants to open a Christian coffeehouse and already has a name in mind. Colorado LLC laws allow LLCs to be formed with one or more members, taxes them at a lower rate like partnerships and sole proprietorships, and provides the members with lower liability that protects them from the company’s debt (Scrofano, n.d.). This form of business will give Shania the ability to name her company what she wants and run it how she wants. The limited liability is also desirable.

Nowadays, organizations have a corporate social responsibility to fulfill in the business industry. There is a variety of definitions for corporate social responsibility however; a common definition is a business integrates social and environmental concerns in their everyday business operations on a voluntary basis (Murphy, 2010). It is important that managers behave ethically and morally so other individuals will follow their guidance. A manager is responsible for fair treatment of employees, customers, and suppliers, building trustworthy relationships, and being transparent (Murphy, 2010). As a result, managers that are in executive level positions are oftentimes, most responsible for any unethical or
Industries around the world, some more than other, have revenue and assets higher than the GDP of a number of nations. This makes them more powerful than those nations. These companies are run by Individuals who essentially make decisions on how the profit is made and how operations and activities are carried out. Their actions and decisions could potentially have an impact on a number of things, generally; the environment, national economies and even the lives of people somewhere on the globe. Making ethical decisions entails the decision maker(s) moral judgement about what is right and wrong and is carried out based on what they think is the right course of action. This may involve whiling away what could potentially increase a business’s yield financially but will also cause harm or pain for other stakeholder’s involved. This is why among many other reasons, ethics is very important for both the businesses and the society.
A company has to consider strategic initiatives while analyzing all possible outcomes of regulations, decisions and actions and thus, represents an overview of the challenges within values & ethics based decision-making (Mahmoud-Jouini, Burger-Helmchen, Charue-Duboc & Doz, 2015). “Business ethics has drawn renewed attention due to corporate sandals. In addition to the growing importance of governmental regulations, increase pressure from different stakeholders has placed the business ethics as a challenge on all the firms” (Lal, 2015), p. 1). Companies not only have a responsibility to their shareholders and stakeholders, but their suppliers, government, creditors, consumers, community and employees from a local and global perspective in regards to ethical considerations in globalization (Lal, 2015).
The current business is a family run farm. The farm has a capacity of 20 stalls; 10 of those stall are filled with boarders while the other 10 hold Megan’s horses, her father’s horses, or horses that belong to the barn. The barn is breaking even while using the money from boarders to cover the family owned horses.
If the Court fails to apply the PNA so that Respondent holds Petitioner's one-half shares in trust for her, it must divide the parties' interests in the business. It must consider expert opinion as to the community value assigned to community businesses. The expert's reports diverge greatly as to the businesses' community value primarily due to the issue of "tax affecting 8," a debated issue in the business valuation professional community for at least twenty years. Husband's expert reduces the businesses adjusted earnings by a fictional 40% tax rate (the old federal and state tax rate which will imminently be 20% when the current budget reconciliation process is complete), wife's expert does not. As discussed below, this difference in
E-Business is a growing segment of both the wholesale and retail markets. The ease of communication, comparison and the simplicity of the overall shopping experience have led to a boom in online businesses as the internet becomes an increasingly integrated component of our lives. Evogear.com is one of the corporations to ride the wave of e-business and consumers shift towards online shopping. In fact, riding the wave is a perfect metaphor for Evogear as they market and sell discount snowboard, skateboard, and wakeboarding gear online.

This problem of creating a trendy stylish image of cigarettes are hurting many people by recruiting new young smokers from all around the world, winning over sales due to the false image and then addiction. Third world countries are hurt the most by this unethical way of advertising because they don’t have money for this extra expense that they now need due to addiction. Critics claim that sophisticated promotions in a unsophisticated societies entice people who cannot afford the necessities of life to spend money on luxury- and a dangerous one at that. Every cigarette manufacturer is in the image business, and tobacco companies say their promotional slant is both reasonable and common. They point out that in the Third World a lot of people cannot understand what is written in the ads anyway, so the ads zero in on the more understandable visual image. Due to actions such as this and the negative effect it has on people economically and physically, this is a good example of how the tobacco industry is unethical.
The objective for this project was “How can I create an effective sales presentation to encourage my potential client to hire me to style and makeover them and their wardrobe?” I did this by first making outfits tailored to Miss. Diaz’s style, color analysis, body shape and face shape. I used pastel pink, dark red, dark green, and yellow to make her hair stand out and to go well with her skin color. I also added belts to accentuate her waist and give her more of an hourglass shape. From the interview I learned that she prefers lose and soft clothing and more country styled clothing. I also learned that she does not like to wear rings or too heavy earrings.
