10:32 p.m. PDT on August 5th, 2012 the Mars rover Curiosity made its very precarious landing on the red planet. Curiosity is the largest rover that has ever been sent into space with very impressive specifications. Curiosity has a total mass of 1,982 pounds, which is a little below the weight of a car, along with it being over 10 feet long 9 feet wide and 7 feet tall. Curiosity also has a brand new power source, it uses a Radioisotope power system that generates power from the natural decay of the plutonium isotope: Plutonium-238. Since Curiosity has such a large mass engineers at N.A.S.A had to create a new landing system for the plus sized rover. Engineers at N.A.S.A created a landing system for Curiosity called the “Sky Crane” which would
On May 25, 1961 President John F. Kennedy paved the way for the world’s first lunar landing when he announced the US’s ambitious goal to place an American on the moon before the end of the decade. This historic announcement was fueled by desires to beat the Soviet Union, and show the United State’s dominance, the need for a uniting cause among the American people, and a desire to lead the world in the scientific field.
During the twentieth century, the power struggle between the United States and the Soviet Union emerged through proxy wars and the Space Race. The Cold War began in 1947 when the United States worried about the growing influence of the Soviet Union on Eastern European nations(Challenge to Apollo). The rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States had become one of the biggest contests, that eventually culminated in the dissociation of the Soviet Union. Although many different events occurred during the Cold War, perhaps the most important one would be the Space Race. Despite popular belief that the atomic bomb made America a global superpower, the moon landing was the main reason why America prevailed as a global superpower because it showed America had superior technology, a preferred ally, and pulled America into the lead of the Cold War.
Today is March 13th, 2114, just over 110 years since the first Mars rovers landed on the surface of Mars. Yet, little progress has been made in developing a human colony amidst the many issues that plague humans attempting to survive on the surface. Many people look back on the incidents of 2078, 2092, and most recently 2106 as reasons to not continue to explore Mars. Each one of those colonies of 300 people lasted less than a year before the last human was dead and the colony was considered a failure. Most people look back at the 2106 incident as reason to not settle on Mars. On February 23rd, 2106, a blast of Solar Energetic Particles with an energy of nearly
For more than five years, NASA’s Curiosity rover has been roaming around the Mars. While it’s been great success, the lonesome robot is now showing the sign of aging, with its broken wheel. Even NASA’s modern technology couldn’t save them from the rigorous weather of Mars. To solve this problem, NASA has gone back to the middle age to create a superelastic tire. Based on the principals of chainmail armor, this game changing tire can repel more deformation compared to any other non-pneumatic tire. Besides, this superelastic tire could survive any kind of extra planetary abuse and ensures better tractions in next-generation rovers.
Always thinking ahead, the engineers came up with a solution. They created a device to complete the last step of the landing. The device was called a “sky crane.” When the sky crane was close to Mars’s surface, it used a set of cables to lower Curiosity onto the ground.
The issues of immigration and deportation have dominated the news. Many of immigrants family are afraid to deport them back to their countries, and they have been in the United States for more than a decade. Children are anxious about their undocumented parents deported. Nowadays, the immigration issue is happening not only in the United States, also it is happening around the world. The threat of deportation is stressful and traumatic for undocumented immigrants because the children are in fear their families separation.
Mars is an interesting and mysterious planet. It is often referred to as the Red Planet. The Romans named Mars after the god of war. The rocks, soil, and sky all have a red hue on account of rust. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun at about 141 million miles (228 million kilometers) and the last terrestrial planet from the Sun. Mars follows closely behind Earth but is comparatively smaller, with about half the diameter of Earth (6,794-km) and about one-tenth of Earth s mass (6.419 x 1023 kg). Thus the force of gravity on Mars is about one-third of that on Earth. Mars is probably the planet we know the most about since it is so close to Earth, though what we know now is not even close to everything about the planet. Over
The discovery of water on Mars and traces of it on the moon has caused many scientists and people to become thrilled. The evidence of water in other planets is hope for the possibility of life too. NASA is planning to send a rover over to Mars in 2020, to find any evidence of life (NASA In ESA's ExoMars Rover). The ExoMars Rover will be able to identify chemicals present in the atmosphere and in rocks and provide evidence for questions such as the existence of life on the Red planet (NASA In ESA's ExoMars Rover). Mars is one of the millions of planets that scientific community is hoping to finds signs of life on. The news of life on a different planet would momentous for people worldwide. It would be a discovery that would clear up several
There are many potential dangers with the Mars One Mission. Mars can be a very dangerous and scary place to live. The trip to Mars One is dangerous. Going to mars would not be a good idea in 2023 because there will not be any oxygen, no food is grown there at this time, and one could be exposed to dangers outside.
In 2011, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, the rover given name as Mars Curiosity, began to inspect the Martian rocks to conclude the geologic procedures that created them and to explore more about the present and past habitability of Mars. Among its findings is the first meteorite on the surface of the red planet. In September 2014, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission reached the red planet, making it the fourth nation to successfully enter orbit around
During the High Middle Ages, there was no strong, central government that was politically organized enough to meet common needs of the people in Europe. After the fall of Charlemagne’s empire, invasions and anarchy became the societal norm. If they wanted to survive, they had to meet particular needs. The people of the High Middle Ages met their needs of political organization, economic provision, and social aspects through Feudalism, Manorialism, and through the Church.
With any successful operation or business, there should always be a chain of command. There is a hierarchy and an order that must be followed for it to run smoothly. With any basic business, there are managers and there are employees that are expected to do what is told. In missions with space, the situation should not be any different, if not to an even more extreme extent. Missions to space involve high risk of loss of life. It is the job of NASA’s ground crew and those in charge, to determine what is best for all parties and evaluate pros and cons in all risky situations. Furthermore, there should be an emphasis on the judgement of NASA’s engineers in regard to the safety of the astronauts. In the movie The Martian, and other similar situations,
The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL), also known as the Curiosity rover, is a NASA mission with the goal of discovering details about past and present-day Mars. The primary purpose of the mission is to determine if Mars once had a suitable environment for microbial life. The area of Mars chosen to be studied is an ancient impact crater called the Gale Crater. It has many unique geologic features that piqued the interest of astronomers and geologists and could be indicative of past water flows and possibly habitable environments. Since landing on the crater in 2012, the rover has been very successful and has given a lot of information about the past and present of the plant.
Reality may finally be stranger than fiction. Or at least science fiction inspired by the book and subsequent blockbuster “The Martian.” In the book, Astronaut Mark Watney grew potatoes to survive on Mars. NASA is now attempting to recreate fiction with the assistance of the Lima-based International Potato Center. And Russia may not be far behind in the great potato space race of the 22nd century.
Mars has been sitting out in space for so long Scientists have just looked at Mars as just a planet and now we are on the verge of colonizing it. Key resources are needed for Mars, like water, certain gases, and food, and labs in the USA have them all. Scientists should send people to Mars.
