Martha Nussbaum On Higher Education

Perusing higher education can be done for a few reasons; either wanting to obtain a professional degree for a job, or a liberal arts degree for a set interest. Either way, higher education has become mandatory in many peoples lives. Both, Ronald Barnett and Martha Nussbaum, have similar views on education. Barnett believes that there will always be more to learn, and a proper education should teach that. However, Nussbaum’s approach to the situation states that the United State’s education system is built so students are almost forced into caring about learning the humanities. I believe that higher education is something that can be used to teach students how to act and react when pushed to pursue something more.
Barnett’s idea of higher education makes it so you are never done learning. You are always going to want to go back and learn more; there will always be something else out there to learn. Until one realizes that there is always an unending amount to learn, you will not gain true knowledge. Before attending college, school has been just another thing you have to get through in order to move on to the next step in life. I have chosen to pursue the career path aspect, but, some may choose to study a set of interests. Whichever way a student may choose to study, continuing to take in knowledge will lead to a better and brighter understanding of the world. Comprehension of the world is a view that Nussbaum describes in her passage. She states that the liberal art approach forces one to listen to the world so the student can question and ponder ideas for the future. If you want a generation to get involved, then you must teach them humanities. It is necessary to inform students on shifting views in order to actively engage them. This is not only setting up the building blocks for a career, but for life as a caring
