Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15th, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia. He was the son of the Reverend Michael King and Alberta Williams. His father, a revered member of the black community was an outspoken proponent against racial discrimination. Growing up in a religious household, King was largely influenced by his father who served as role model and helped lay the foundation for his core beliefs. During his college years, King studied under the tutelage of Benjamin E. Mays and George Kelsey who were instrumental in developing Mr. King’s spiritual path that eventually led to his calling as a political activist. Consequently, it was during these early years where King developed his passion to increase the nonviolent civil rights
