Martin Luther king, Mahatma Gandhi, and Henry David Thoreau, authors of “Letter From Birmingham Jail”, “On nonviolent protest”, and “Civil Disobedience” respectively protests similar oppressors in each of these works and though each is different in their claims, all are renowned for their use of rhetoric in achieving utmost effectiveness. Each of these pieces of literature were written to not only bring attention to the intolerable injustices each movement faced, but also to introduce and assert methods of opposing them. Each figure created their renowned works to persuade those in their their party to take action and those not yet apart of it to join using rhetorical devices ethos, logos, and pathos.
Though the names Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, and Henry David Thoreau hold ample credibility in themselves, though each in diverse respects, in their speeches regarding the issues of civil disobedience they use similar tactics under Ethos in which rather than list all they have accomplished, they form credibility by showing their relation to the cause and their place among the people.This is most effective over listing their credentials and points of power as each of their causes are in defend of and a movement of the people, of ordinary citizens who are fighting to be heard who are fighting against those with the power. According to Martin Luther King Jr’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, there are many ways to achieve this, but the best possible course of action would be through nonviolent direct action, which includes but is not limited to: peaceful protest, sit-ins and civil disobedience. In King’s letter, he proclaims his reasoning behind nonviolent direct action, including: the concept that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere” (par. 4), extremism can be used positively (par. 22), and the fact that “oppressed people will not stay oppressed forever” (par. 24). King uses literary devices including ethos, logos, and pathos to prove and reaffirm that which he is trying to convey.

Henry David Thoreau’s “Civil Disobedience” and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter From Birmingham Jail” were written over one hundred years apart. Although they are set in different time periods, they discuss the rights the American people should have, while also criticizing the people with superior power in the government. Thoreau’s aggressive writing style and King’s peaceful, calm style help to deliver their messages. Martin Luther King did a lot of things that still effect today. He got in trouble for some things as well; such as like protesting how blacks were treated. He was arrested and was sent to Birmingham City Jail. He wrote a letter to defend the strategies of nonviolent resistance to racism. He employs the use of pathos, ethos, and logos to support his argument that nonviolence resistance is definitive. Based on the pathos, ethos, and logos present in this letter, the article is overall effective to this argument.

Although both essays present very similar ideas, it is important to note the similarities and differences which are evident through the use of language and the presentation of the arguments and ideas because if it were not for the proper use of language, tone, and presentation of the idea of civil disobedience in Dr. King’s letter, he might not have been successful in his campaign; Thoreau initially presented the idea of civil disobedience in 1848, but his contemporaries dismissed his political essays.
