Love is many things other than being told 'I love you.' It is the small things that truly prove love. Harper Lee once said that her book To Kill A Mockingbird was a love story. This is true in many other than what people typically think of when they hear 'love story.' To Kill A Mockingbird is not about two people falling in love, but about the endearment towards different groups of people and family in a tough time during American history. In the book, Atticus shows love towards the black community through his actions. He also shows love towards his children in a distant yet caring way.
Love. What is it? What is its purpose? The J. Geils Band says love stinks. Pat Benatar says love is a battlefield. The idea of love proliferates every aspect of our human culture. Love influences our literature, music, religion, and social lives. Love makes us do funny things, makes us feel warm and fuzzy, hurts us, brings people together, and transforms lives. Love transforms us. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. There are multiple types of love such as brotherly love and courtly love. Courtly love is an example of how love transforms a person. In the traditional definition of courtly love, the love-struck hero is on a constant struggle to reach the object of his affection. While Cervantes provides an accurate portrayal of courtly love in Don Quixote, Dante’s version in Inferno and Purgatory is a more convincing use of courtly love because his character, Dante, emerges as a transformed character through the process of trying to get to his beloved Beatrice.
Finally, Reuniting with someone after a long period of time shows that separation can not stop one’s from pursuing its loved ones. Certainly many readers seem to consider that Henry does not give up on Keiko too easily because they reconvene at the end. However, in the first place, Henry never wanted to go, as he genuinely believes that there are no benefit and that it is the only alternative way. On the way home from Camp Harmony, Henry reflected about what his father says: “His father said once that the hardest
These different kinds of love help to make the novel more complex and offer more viewpoints to the story. Family love is a great theme in the novel, and we see it in many forms. For example, we see it in the early chapters between Cecilia and Briony- Cecilia and Briony have an extremely strong relationship that falls apart as the novel progresses. The memory of Cecilia comforting Briony in a nightmare- “It’s only a dream. Come back” in Chapter 3, Page 44 helps tell us about the relationship they have with eachother, and also helps to show how Briony has unconditional support and loyalty to her family. Briony’s fault is that she cannot comprehend the idea that her siblings can be in any way sexual- she fails to see that Cecilia could be in a consenting relationship with Robbie in the library, and she tries to get her brother Leon to “provoke his admiration, and guide him away from a careless succession of girlfriends, and towards the right form of wife”. This strong family love is shown through Briony being undeniably loyal to Cecilia as she calls herself “Cecilia’s protector” and thinks a tragedy will bring them closer together. Everything she does is a step towards protecting her family. Family love is explored through all the characters, and the different relationships offer different viewpoints to the story- Lola and Briony, Robbie and Grace, Emily and Briony...these relationships show pure and strong family love.
At this point, Henry does not know anything of love. Throughout the whole First Book, Henry ignorantly disregards any possibility of love. ³I knew I did not love Catherine Barkley nor had any idea of loving her² (30). He willfully entered a relationship with Catherine, but did not have serious intentions with her, yet. To him it was just a ³game ... in which you said things² like ³I love you² (30). Henry casually speaks of this so-called love to Catherine, but her past experience with her fiancé have made her cautious when dealing with love. She knows the reality of love and the extent of Henry¹s feelings, ³You don¹t have to pretend you love me² (31).
Love is what pushes each character to the edge. It is what makes them do irrational things and make the mistakes they make in this story. Ethan lived a strange life to be sure. His father was on his deathbed when Ethan was called back to the farm. When his father died he inherited the farm. At that point his mother fell ill and needed someone to take care of her. Zeena answered that call. She stayed in the farm house until the mother's death. Ethan not wanting to be left alone in the house begged Zenna to stay with him. Inevitable they married but not out of love. It was a loveless marriage from the start but, Ethan went through with it because he did not want to go through being lonely again. This is where the actual story kicks off. It is where the love theme really shines. For years Ethan lived a loveless marriage leaving him hungry for a love filled relationship. Like Ethan’s mom Zenna fell sick and had to have someone to help in the house while Ethan was working on the farm. Mattie was a perfect choice and Mattie started to live in Ethan’s house. Ethan and Mattie fell head over heels in love for eachother.
Imagine going through life without any emotions or feelings for anyone. Life would be methodical and boring; one should be enjoying their life with friends and loved ones. Ones character would be affected greatly without relationships intertwined within ones life. Life would be more enjoyable when having someone to share good and bad memories. It is always best to keep the most important relationships closest to the heart. By doing this, dealing with life struggles can become a much more easy ordeal. In the book, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry and Keiko were always there for each other. Jamie Ford, the author, was able to portray two best friends that shared an ordinary yet unique childhood.
To start with, love is a necessity amongst the characters in the novel. Henry and Catherine find one another amidst the First World War. Both of them longly desire to find something that will pull them away from the war and into something greater. Henry is in search of love, there is a deep void in his heart that Hemingway implanted in him, although it might not seem as if it is prevalent at the start of the novel, it protrudes itself periodically. When Henry and his good friend Rinaldi frequently attend brothels, it is to attempt to fill the emptiness that war has drawn from them. When Henry and Catherine are apart they share a feeling of being aloof and gloomy. "Why darling, I don 't live at all when I 'm not with you." (Hemingway Pg 38). Henry and Catherine begin to have an affair out of wedlock due to the amount of frequent visits amongst each other, during this time having pre-marital sex was looked down upon

Love lies underneath the surface waiting for the one much like a volcano waiting to erupt. Love is the unselfish loyal concern for the good of another. Love can oftentimes create a strong bond between two people. This concept is often a popular theme within literature. As Janie develops throughout Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, she constantly learns and grows from her experiences.
The relationship between these two is closer then what Henry had in his childhood, but it also has its bumps in the road. After Henry's wife dies the relationship between Henry an Marty became very distant. The relationship of father and son has always been distant for Henry so the urge for him to fix it wasn't that great. After time went by the father and son became closer after Marty told his father he was engaged. I find it very unique that the quote "like father like son" really describes Henry's relationships because as much as he hated his father he became just like him to his own son. I truly believe this happened because Henry is suffering from a broken heart from his wife but mostly his childhood friend
Throughout history, the media has shown many different sides of love. Weather it be peaceful, violent, dangerous, beautiful, almost all forms of the media have shown love in some way. In the novel The Great Gatsby, love is shown between many different characters in different ways. The reader experiences love at its best and worst. We see relationships flourish, rekindle and end between the different characters. The most controversial relationship is the relationship between Daisy and Tom. Through infidelity, and mistrust, tragedy occurs. Other characters become associated with their marital problems, showing different kinds of love and relationships. In the play Hamlet, the reader also experiences many different kinds of love, ranging from
According to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, love is defined as “strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties; attraction based on sexual desire; affection and tenderness felt by lovers; affection based on admiration, benevolence, or common interest; or an assurance of love.” In William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, three different types of love are experienced: friendship love, true love, and self love. Each character experiences a different type of love, and in some cases it is not what they originally expected. The twisted, yet intriguing love story allows the reader to get lost in each characters emotions and development throughout the play. Many instances of love in the play are overwhelmed with a
Love is one of the strongest bonds that keep any number of humans together. This bond, combined with our natural instinct to cooperate with each other is the strongest by far one of the strongest bonds that almost nothing can break. Love stories can be one of the most complicated to describe, and once two people establish the bond of love the need to cooperate with each other no matter what falls apart in the relationship can never be broken. Ha Jin depicts a story very similar to this in his novel Waiting.
As a first point, love is a key aspect in creating a sense of belonging and stability between Catherine and Frederic in the novel, playing the role of an anchor in the midst of a gruesome plot of war. In his commentary, Armstrong notes that “... the development of Barkley and Henry’s relationship from casual lovers to de facto wife and husband confirms the strength of their love and that love’s power to illuminate
