The Road to Education Mary Bethune once said, “The drums of Africa still beat in my heart. They will not let me rest while there is a single negro boy or girl without a chance to prove his worth.” On July 10, 1875 in South Carolina an inspiration was born upon us. Out of the 17 siblings, she was the 15th. Mary’s parents were former slaves so she was raised in poverty. She was the first of her family to attend school. Her teacher, Miss Wilson, inspired her to grow into more education. Thats where we will begin, with her beginning road to education. Mary Bethune was a black rights activist and fought for women’s rights. In other words she stood for black freedom. Since when she was a kid she didn’t get much education yet she still believed
