Norfolk State University, a historically black university, is rich in history and deeply rooted in the south eastern Virginia region. NSU is the only HBCU founded in the midst of the great depression. Since, NSU has grown tremendously over the last eighty years. Now, the campus spans 134 acers and has 40 buildings, four of which were newly built as of 2011. Through partnerships with neighboring universities, community organizations and business vendors, Norfolk State provides vital services to this area. It is a pristine center of education and a hub of black excellence and achievement. Needed now, more than ever, is a reflection on NSU’s political, cultural and social relevance in 2015.

Northwest Missouri State University is a great place for everybody to learn. They have a numerous amount of majors and make it easy for first time freshman, transfer students, and international students to apply. NWMSU has many activities for everybody including intramurals, concerts, and recreation centers. They have many different options for housing and meal plans, which they also make very affordable for everybody. Northwest Missouri State also offers in-state tuition to out of state students that meet the requirements. The University is in a town of 12,000 and is one of the safest towns in the Nation.

After deciding to get entry into the PharmD program, I started on-line research for many pharmacy colleges and curriculum. Gateway Community College Central City Campus (former Maricopa Skill center) targets “at-risk”, low-income students, such as school dropouts, students just out of correction facilities, Hispanic students and more. That’s why the campus has the Essential skills trainings Department and the testing center. They do all kinds of testing from GED to Accuplacer and various professional testing. A lot of different resources are available for students to pass a basic assessment tests in English and Math. Not to mention that all the programs the campus offers are entry-level, trade skill programs that require no or minimum prerequisites. Western Carolina University provides different resources on campus to allow on to be successful throughout their four or more years on campus. The Academic Advising website and center will guide a study to stay on course with classes while on campus. Western Carolina University also teaches student how to become a responsible adult and fault take fault in one’s actions. Western Carolina provides many opportunities for a student to become a successful adult.

Over the course of my education experience, I’ve been to four higher educational institutions. However, the one I want to highlight is Roberts Wesleyan College (RWC).

The university spent money on operations, non-operations, and construction of the university (Florida State University, 2016a). Operating expenses was the area where most of the spending was occurring, and sixty-three percent of the operating expenses involved compensation and employee benefits (Florida State University, 2016a). Florida State University (2016a) explained that there was approximately a five percent increase for compensation and employee benefits compared to the previous year. The operating expenses were $510.7 million more than the operating budget, and non-operating revenues were used to cover the remaining balance (Florida State University, 2016a). Southern Methodist University (SMU) was the first major Methodist institution in the South to enroll African American students. SMU started the process of desegregation a decade before others, namely Duke, Emory, Rice, Tulane, and Vanderbilt. Heman Sweatt, an African American, won a legal case allowing him to attend the University of Texas in November 1950. After Herman’s victory, SMU President Umphrey Lee went to the SMU Board of Trustees to open admissions for African Americans as regular students at Perkins School of Theology (Cashion, 2013). African Americans started attending SMU as regular students in January of 1951. Neither the church nor the city was ready to do what SMU did, and this is what makes the story so fascinating.

I firmly believe that education is at the base of success. I wanted to pursue a master 's degree in the nonprofit field because I wanted to fully grasp and understand the sector so that I could contribute to its success. As I began to research advanced degrees that revolved around the nonprofit sector I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Bay Path University had a nonprofit management and philanthropy program.

I think it is hard to tell whether Carroll University, as an institution, encourages a successful learning environment. I am certain that this is an institutional goal for Carroll. However, when we look at college level education, I get the sense that professors tend to have a little more freedom (and resources available) when it comes to teaching. This may make it easier for a professor to adjust a class/classroom as described in this week’s reading (Hannah) in order to meet the needs of his/her students. This, in my mind, makes a successful learning environment much more dependent on the instructor rather than the institution itself (although the institution can certainly have an effect on the learning environment).
