The Game We Play is a thirty chapter fanfiction posted on Livejournal by an anonymous person. The Game We Play is a fanfiction about the DC characters Batman and Joker starting off as enemies then flirting with each other and eventually falling in love. Batman is clearly different in the fanfiction then he is portrayed in the movies. In the movies, comic books, or animated television shows that Batman is portrayed in, he is shown as masculine, “straight”, and tough. The author of the fanfiction has taken a different route to portray Batman and Joker, who are both usually known as violent, straight, and tough and showed a side where their masculinity is not toxic. According to Wikipedia, “Toxic masculinity is used in psychology to describe certain traditional male norms of behavior in the United States and Europe that are associated with harm to society and to men themselves. Such "toxic" masculine norms include the traits of dominance, devaluation of women, extreme self-reliance, and the suppression of emotions.” I believe since …show more content…
She believes Batman does have friends and family but it is that he is so isolated that he can not even call the Joker his “greatest enemy”. He is so reluctant to let anyone into his life, that he refuses to admit that him and Joker have a special relationship – that would be too much like letting someone in.” This statement plays a big role in the point the author of the fanfiction is trying to make. In the beginning of this chapter Batman is refusing to open up or flirt back with the Joker due to his own emotional issues whether it is about his parents death or just the fact that men are taught at a young age that they should not cry or express their emotional side because that is too
When you hear the phrase “toxic masculinity,” it’s usually used as a joke. For those of you who have somehow never heard of toxic masculinity in this context, it’s not something that’s taken seriously. It criticizes patriarchal societies, so a patriarchal society isn’t going to just accept it.
Batman comes off more of a “player” as throughout the comics and in the initial episode of 1966 he grabs the “attention” of women. Midhurst explains, “The threat she embodies is nothing less than heterosexuality itself, the deadliest threat of the Bat-couple” (157). For example, in The Batman the Golden age Cat women utters, “I sort of wish the batman were driving this car and I were sitting beside him. And we were just another boy and girl out for a ride” (396, 8). Throughout the series Cat women appears and she is the criminal that batman allows to get away with it because of his evident love for her. Batman gets thrown off of his mission fighting crime In addition, in the episode seen in class “Hi Diddle Riddle” batman was sent to a disco by the Riddler. As soon as batman walks in a women is in awe struck as she says “its Batman” and feints. After that, he is seen being flirtatious with Molly who is ally of the Riddler. He goes as far as having a drink with her and even dancing with her. In that moment he forgets what he actually is there looking for, by being mesmerized by the seductive women. It gives the idea that Batman can get away with any
To be Batman takes a lot of courage.” This quote conveys how vital courage is to the importance of the play because it represents how valuable and strong a human characteristic can
The sports industry is one controlled by organizations that are large, powerful, and old. At times, the public can have powerful effects on these behemoths, but these behemoths can also have powerful effects on the public. The sports industry influences the next generation, and “The presentation of sport in the media tends to emphasize behaviors that include certain values, attitudes, and beliefs that mirror the history of sport and maintain the status quo.” (Woods 100) I will refer to this as a premise. We start with the status quo of hegemonic masculinity.
When you hear the phrase “toxic masculinity”, it’s usually used as a joke. However, there’s a reason that it’s a concept. “Toxic masculinity” is a social science term used to describe the phenomenon within a society where “masculine” traits, such as anger, violence, egotism, contempt, aggression, as well as showing destructive or apathetic behavior, are rewarded. Normally, these traits are regulated by law and society. When the boys are taken out of society, however, they have no restraints, leading to the boys relying on these traits. In their minds, aggression and violence are good; however, a successful society cannot be made from violence.
From the feeling of treading on freshly-cut grass to the exhilaration of victory, football is a sport loved by many. Nearly one hundred eighty-seven million Americans describe themselves as fans of the NFL (Thomas). Truly, the raw passion and intensity that radiates from the field keeps the viewers watching, wanting more. The struggle for power between two teams only heightens the amount of cheering from the stands, because all the audience wants to see is a game of domination. Football emphasizes the image of masculinity through the hulking figures of its players: violent, domineering, and aggressive. Although a game of fine strategy and tactic, there is no elegance on the field, only the singular driving thought of winning by any means.
All people know the words: basketball, football, soccer, baseball, and tennis, but people rarely relate those words to: self-worth, drugs, body image, or feminine. Many people over look the effects of sports on those who participate in sports and how they see themselves. The values of masculinity and competitiveness in sports affect the way people see themselves negatively by pushing a masculine physique and competitiveness on those who do not fit within these categories. These values often change within certain sports, but are present, somehow, in every sport or athletic activity. One value that greatly affects the way people view themselves is masculinity.
We often hear the phrase nowadays of “toxic masculinity”. Many use it but often without explanation. What exactly is toxic masculinity? Why is masculinity and the history of hypermasculinity in American culture so toxic? In American culture, there is a history of a “survival of the fittest” mentality. The strongest men are domineering and powerful, and take no nonsense from women, or progressives, or gay people. These traits are hypermasculine, an extremeness of generic masculinity, both of which should be handled with care, as masculinity itself is a fragile construct. American masculinity can be extremely toxic and dangerous to both the men themselves and the people around them. Masculinity can often be a cage to men, whom society
Healthy masculinity Many people confuse the difference between masculinity and toxic masculinity however, the difference is huge because one can be masculine without having toxic masculinity. First, let's define toxic masculinity it's basically a term that describes a narrow oppressive type of ideas about the role and expectations of a male so if someone doesn’t do any of these roles he won't be classified as a man or will oddly be judged as not being a real man. Being Sexually aggressive, abusive and emotionless are all traits of the toxic masculinity. Toxic masculinity is harmful to men since they have to live up to its expectations and harms everyone else as a consequence of these actions.
Social construction is defined as “a socially created aspect of social life” (Board of studies, 2009, pg.52) and has played a significant role in the way gender roles for males is perceived in society. Masculinity is “the meaning and expressions given to being male and the social organisation of men’s lives and relations” (WHO, 2010, pg.10). Masculinity has adapted throughout the years in regards to how the society that we live in has socially constructed standards for males and how it has affected masculinity. Therefore it has allowed individuals to conform to what society requires males to be. Factors that play a role in the social construction of masculinity are parents/friends, the media, ethnicity and the government.
Within American culture and society professional sports, especially football, has always been a major component. It has been used for entertainment as well as promoting and encouraging qualities and values in those who play like good sportsmanship and how to work as a team. But is that the only thing it promotes? Football is essentially a battle to obtain power over the other team using strength and knowledge in order to win fame and money. In order to gain power one must be stronger, more masculine, and in most cases more violent. While football does reflect many great ideals about our society it also reflects back to us many negative ideals. Football reflects back to us and even determines our ideas that sovereign power is only attainable
Masculinity, as defined by Webster, is the possession of the qualities traditionally associated with men. In the year of 2018, are we still following these traditional senses of masculinity in nontraditional ways? Traditional masculinity/ hegemonic masculinity can be defined as a practice that legitimizes men's dominant position in society, justifies the subordination of women, and other marginalized ways of being a man. Even in such an advance society our ideas of masculinity lag in comparison to our overall development of a greater culture. This delay is evident in our work environments, classrooms, and any other place imaginable.
Social lives start and finish with leisure activity. Leisure activity starts social lives because it generates the time that can be spent to engage in recreational time or leisure time. Furthermore, an individual’s activity does not have to be a group activity it can be a solo activity because when the individual is not with friends or families the activity that their doing will be because of a certain socio-cultural factor. Therefore, an individual will workout because of the gender identity and the double bind of masculinity. The reason for this is because most men will workout to change their appearance to become more masculine and powerful but are not suppose to care about their appearance.
Introduction: Masculinity is traditionally considered to be a characteristic of a male due to the fact that they possess qualities such as activeness, competitiveness, and strength which are typically appropriate to a man. This has changed over the years due to the fact that females are now taking part in a lot of functions that used to strictly only be available for males to take part in. for example, when the Olympics were first created in Athens and a women was caught watching the men competing in any events she had to be executed. These days however women are taking part in a lot more activities that males are known for, such as exercising and competing in sports. It seems that they are gradually coming out and being just as athletic as men.
He seeks attention from Batman by attempting to destroy his moral character. He wants to prove that every man, even the most orderly, logical and self – controlled of us all, can break or abandon his moral code when driven to do so. By driving Batman toward the temptation of killing him, the Joker can effectively prove to the world that everyone is one and the same. The Joker believes that everyone is intrinsically evil and is unsatisfied by Batman’s maintained nobility. He wants Batman to kill a person to simply prove his point and knows that he is the only one person Batman might ever come remotely close to killing. Batman wants to remain a moral character to express that it is basic human decency and natural instincts that keeps our morality in check. The ability to remain ethical and moral in the face of temptation is an example that Batman can fully exemplify. Batman is a symbol law, order and control while the Joker is a direct contrast, representing the inherently corrupt nature of society. He perfectly embodies chaos and anarchy and therefore wants to prove that a chaotic, unrestrained temperament can overpower a controlled
