Masculinity In The Odyssey

When you think of a hero what usually comes to mind? Is it masculinity, or someone with attractive features in appearance, or someone who has the strength of ten men? A boy named Tyler Doohan, an 8 year old boy that tried to save his family from a fire in his trailer home, died trying to save his grandfather which was his best friend. He sacrificed his life to save his family, which is what Odysseus did in both part one and two, he tried to save his crew but their actions cost them, and he saved his wife and son from the suitors invading their home. Odysseus does fit the role as a “modern” hero.

Odysseus fits the role as a modern hero because in the story Odysseus outwits some of his enemies. “The Cyclops’ rams were handsome, fat, with heavy fleece, a dark violet.” (Pg. 571,Line 376) Odysseus hides his men under Polythemus’s sheep because, Polythemus was blinded and unable to see. To save his men Odysseus proved that more mattered than himself. These are a few ways that Odysseus saved his crew and out witted his enemies. …show more content…

“And the man looked away, wiping a salt tear from his cheek; but he hid this from Eumaeus.” (Pg. 601, Line 1180) Odysseus hid his identity from Eumaeus when Argus passed away because he shed a tear and kept it hidden. Odysseus kept his identity secret to protect Telemachus and his wife
