Motivation arouses the enthusiasm of an individual. When utilized effectively, it emphasizes a leader’s tenacity to pursue a particular course of action that ultimately achieves a certain behavior. Ordinarily, human beings are very complex individuals and ccontinously require a variety of needs. Consequently, I prefer the Hierarchy of Needs Theory over the other two (Herzberg Two-Factor and McClelland’s Acquired Needs) content motivation theories. According to Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory, human beings require five levels of needs which are lowest to highest: Physiological, Safety and Security, Love (social), Esteem, and Self-Actualization Needs (Robbins & Judge, 2015). 5. Describe an example of a leadership role that you have performed in your career
As I have mentioned in a few of my previous posts, I work under the Dean of Students and responsible for all academic integrity violations within the university. Soon after I began working with my new division, I learned that the current way the organization perceived academic dishonesty was antiquated and required a new approach. An example of a discarded process involved the referral of students who have violated the said policy to the president’s office. Faculty relied on the feedback from this office to apply the appropriate sanctions. Consequently, this created a backlog for final grades posting on time. One of the suggestions I made was to allow an instructor to make the final decision on the sanction since they are the subject matters and only report the violation for tracking purposes. This was received very well and currently the preferred method for reporting such violations. Other initiatives I spearheaded included the travel companion program. Most of the directors were always on the road and spending as little time as possible with their loved ones. The initiative allowed employees to travel with their significant others when possible. Consequently, the company now pays up to three travel expenses for significant others in a three month period.
