I have been captivated with media, mass communication and public relations from a young age. For even as a young teen I would share the daily newspaper with my parents and pester them with questions regarding the major stories I had just read. Moreover, I would assist my father in planning and organizing the family’s annual gatherings, and this task was no easy feat due to the typical high number of attendees to such gatherings and the logistic concerns related to accommodating to their needs and expectations. However, I found that these activities were not only joyful, but also highly insightful and of significant benefit on the development of my event planning, communications and interpersonal skills, as I would take note of the shortcomings of each gathering and work hard during the next gathering in avoiding repeating the mistakes of the previous year. Aware and appreciative of this development, and considering my interest in communication and its subfields, upon earning my high school diploma I decided to specialize my studies and career in the field, and thus I applied to a bachelor of Art in Mass in Communication program with a concentration in Public Relations.
During my undergraduate studies, I had studied the fundamental concepts and theories of social, institutional and mass communication, public relations and media, both traditional and modern. Furthermore, I had the chance to relate my theoretical studies to applicable practice through my internship at the
Today, it is without a doubt that public communication is at the heart of our economy, our politics and our society. It is being used in different aspects of society - studios use it to advertise their films. Advocates use it to encourage social causes. The businessmen use it to furnish their image. Politicians use it, for them to get elected. It is a field constructed on various ideas and images, many information and persuasion, tactics and strategy. There is no product or policy that will ever succeed without a clever message that targets the right audience or people in innovative and creative ways. To communicate strategically is one of today’s ability to communicate and what our programs are all about. Therefore, public communications
During 4 years of undergraduate study, I studied a wide variety of subjects related to communications. And my major helped me to gain diverse experiences. Among these activities, I devoted most of my university year into public relations and tutoring students. My students range from children to adults in 20s. Teaching diverse range of student was definitely a tough job. Skills and systems for each student differed a lot. Thus, I had to create my own solution to offer them better learning. This not only helped achieving my students’ goal, it also helped me to find my
The mass media has become a big part of our society and its counterparts. In a time span of 50 years this medium has influenced society to an extent where it has created wonders. This immaculate tool can control almost every action we perform, from speaking to the actions that every human being performs in society. The mass media has brought upon a new era of idea's and changes in the world we live in. As we analysis media in depth we will find many aspects of media which overlap and some of the smallest factors and aspects of media, which create the biggest impact on society.
Perhaps no one has had a greater impact in the field of public relations as Edward Bernays. He was named one of the 20th century most influential people by LIFE magazine, yet most people don’t even know his name. Known as the “father of public relations”, Bernays was born in Austria in 1891, but his family moved to New York when he was one year old. He would go on to graduate from Cornell with a degree in agriculture, but instead of becoming a farmer he decided on becoming a journalist. During World War 1 he helped the Woodrow Wilson administration to promote the idea that US efforts would bring democracy to Europe. It was during this period that Bernays began to understand the power of propaganda and wondered if it could be used just as effective
My public relations experience is mostly from two intense stints at the public relations consultancy Nam Consult and as the chief publicity and marketing executive for the poetry, music and art extravaganza, The B.O.G.O.F. I joined Nam Consult as an intern in January 2009 and after my internship was asked to stay. At Nam Consult I learnt about the challenges in running a PR business. In retrospect I learnt a deep appreciation for what it takes to be an entrepreneur in Marketing and Communication. The drive and persistence need to keep going in the field are astounding.
Allison Maloney is a public relation major currently but it has not been a direct path for her to come to her major and future career goal. She didn’t enter higher education with public relations in mind. When she started college she attended East Stroudsburg University as a Hospitality Major. She then went to Bergen Community College, first as a business major than as general studies. She then graduated from Bergin with her associate's degree.
Ever since Bernany’s work, public relations have continued to become a vital part to businesses success, as the field continues to grow. While this progression has occurred, different public relations functions also have developed. Specifically,
We are living in information age, where quick access to all types of information is a way of life. People around the relay on media, for information related to politics, culture, sports, technology, economy and various other factors. Although media is applauded for its role in transforming our life by providing relevant and accurate information, there is increasing exasperation about current media practices. Many people believe that current media practices are not aligned with the objective of providing correct information to public. In doing so, media portrays a picture that is favorable to its own objective and may contradict the reality; consequently these practices are termed
Public speaking and event organizing can also be considered as a form of mass media.
I was Barbara Adika’s Principles of Public Relations instructor at the Bowling Green State University in 2007. Barbara completed course work and provided public relations support to the Aurora Gonzalez Community and Family Resource Center, a nonprofit that provides educational, nutritional, and social support programs for families in need of immediate assistance and long-term goal attainment. Barbara displayed a high level of diligence and commitment to her project—she did not have a car but never missed her weekly meeting which was more than 20 miles away. Even then, it was clear that Barbara had a deep interest in helping people from diverse backgrounds.
As part of my practicum experience, I decided to focus on the areas of completion that appeared to further enhance me in my field of public relations such as: promotional media releases, event planning, etiquettes, and deadlines. With Ms. Castillo, I learned many things; however, the process was shaky.
In my pursuit to become an ethical public relations professional, I have written a personal and professional code of ethics that is congruent to PRSA’s code of ethics, my upbringing and biblical teachings. I do not have the power to dictate precise outcomes for every situation, but I am able to apply common values and decision-making processes to arrive at the best possible solution. This document sets forth a framework of responsibilities I will use during and after my matriculation at Georgetown University.
This paper was prepared during the Spring Semester of 2016 for COMM 226-003 - Introduction to Public Relations.
Title------Critically examine both the tensions and shared interests in the relationship between public relations practitioners and journalists.
Throughout my life I have always enjoyed writing and speaking to others. In high school I had many opportunities to speak to organizations in the surrounding community about volunteerism and 4-H. Having had this opportunity opened my eyes to the joy that I have for reaching out to others on matters I find important. I am currently an Agriculture Communications major with an Agriculture Business minor. My journey at Oklahoma State University has allowed for tremendous growth in many areas. I have broad knowledge of journalism, computer skills, public speaking, and many aspects in the agriculture industry. The past two years at Oklahoma State have fueled my dream for a career in public relations. Having the ability to reach out to consumers and
