Besides establishing the morphology of activated mast cells and as an auxiliary tool to ascertain the involvement of mast cell secretion in disease states, electron microscopy has been employed for molecular biology studies. For instance, TEM was used to determine the spatial distribution of the components involved in mast cell signalling. The cluster patterns of the high affinity IgE receptor involved in degranulation (FcεRI), and two of its associated proteins, Lyn and Syk were determined using 5 or 10-nm gold particles on membrane sheets of RBL-2H3 cells35.
