I am pursuing a Master of Planning/Master of Public Administration dual degree in order to complement and leverage the business management experience gained in the corporate world to help environmental conservation non-governmental organizations achieve their missions of sustainable development. During my 20+ years in Corporate America, primarily in information technology and mortgage finance, I procured a diverse set of skills – business and financial management, project work, operations and human resources management – that are valuable to any organization, profit-oriented or mission-based. I have managed many different types of projects, from business process redesign to multi-year, multi-million dollar software development and …show more content…
During this sabbatical, I realized that I want to contribute to more than the bottom line of a corporation and leave more than a trust fund for my heirs.
With the support of my partner and family, I decided to embark on a new career path in environmental conservation. Why environmental conservation? Quite simply, I love the great outdoors. I am awestruck by the diversity and beauty of this world, from the towering cliffs of the Sierras to the coral reefs and abundant sea life of the Pacific to the heather-covered slopes of the Scottish Highlands. I want to do my part to preserve as much as possible for future generations, which requires learning how to meet the ever-growing consumptive needs of development without depleting Earth’s natural resources.
In 2009, I re-entered the workforce and joined Global Green USA, the sole national environmental NGO based in Los Angeles, as an unpaid intern and was eventually hired as a paid employee on two limited-term projects: first as the Database Manager leading an effort to redesign and expand fundraising activities, then as a Policy Associate authoring the 2009 Global Solar Report Cards (see http://www.globalgreen.org/climate/initiatives/solarreportcard/). My time at Global Green USA was an invaluable introduction to what environmental NGOs do and how they
I was raised with the fundamental notion of service to mankind, I have always been interested in society’s injustices and problems, and being a catalyst for change. This has brought me to applying to the University of Central Florida’s Master of Nonprofit Management program within the School of Public Administration. I am currently a practitioner in Social Work and serve as the Director of Social Services at the Orlando Area Command of The Salvation Army. I have received my bachelors and master’s degree in Social Work from Barry University in Miami, FL.
Growing up in Switzerland and Oregon, I learned that nature is greatly valued and it is necessary to respect the environment to prevent impending environmental collapse. Living in a society whose morals and ethics include
I loved experiencing the daily life of a biologist at the National Parks I visited. In Costa Rica, I worked with the endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles, Butterfly Biodiversity, and Oak Reforestation efforts in Cloudbridge Nature Reserve. I would love to grow my passion and knowledge of Conservation and preserving the environment by working Yellowstone National Park. I love traveling and visiting new places. While I have certainly learned of Yellowstone previously, I have yet to experience the park for myself. I hope to extend my love and experience in Conservation to
Weekend conservation studies are provided as well. Expert gardeners, university students and various adults groups have increased their environmental intelligence on the ten acres of land at CEC (CEC, 2017).
As part of the (MET) curriculum I have studied Building Environmental Systems and obtained WHMIS certification. My organizational, communication and planning skills have allowed me to succeed in fast-paced environments. I have the proven ability to work independently and collaboratively. As team player, I am well liked and respected by coworkers.
“Conservation refers to actions that aim to protect natural environments from present and future change. For example, nature conservancies purchase land that is deemed to be at risk in order to prevent exploitation of the area for residential, industrial, or agricultural development” (“Conservation,” 2009). Environmental conservation in the Tampa Bay area carries a great importance because of our natural resources with estuaries for wildlife and the aquifer, which supplies clean water to residents in the area. Tampa Bay residents interested in environmental conservation, have access to a variety of
As a young child, I was always on the edge–the edge of the forbidden forest that cast my backyard in shadow, the edge of the high-rising countertop that threatened to falter my steps, and the edge of the North American continent on the old dusty map spread across my bedroom floor. I was adventurous; I loved to seek all that was unknown in the environment by which I was surrounded. The curiosity within me has bloomed as the years have come to pass; it has taken me to places I had once dreamed of and has been my guide through the inception of discovering the veins of glorious life that pump restlessly through the world and me. This yearning for sagacious knowledge has fueled my desire to follow along a scientific path; with that said, my professional goal is to negate the mundane and explore the world (and preserve its beauty) through work as an environmental
Environmentalism is a philosophy, ideology, and social movement I, akin to the BTI, support daily. Using an online blog, I raise awareness and spread education for the establishment of balanced relations between humans and natural systems. Furthermore, I am an active donator and member – voicing concerns and opinions – of the online COVE community (in association with the Oceanic Preservation Society), working towards a new standard in environmental ethics to produce more food but less ecological impact. Transcending online advocacy, this semester, I am working with the student government at my university to found a COVE
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science & Policy Minor in Management in May 2016. During my four years at Clark, I’ve gained in depth knowledge of racial, environmental, and social justice issues in and outside of the classroom.
I firmly believe that education is at the base of success. I wanted to pursue a master 's degree in the nonprofit field because I wanted to fully grasp and understand the sector so that I could contribute to its success. As I began to research advanced degrees that revolved around the nonprofit sector I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Bay Path University had a nonprofit management and philanthropy program.
The environment is the home to all living and non-living organisms. It can be compared to a life support system that ensures the well-being of everyone. Recent cases of environmental degradation pose a threat to nature and the entire ecosystem. There has been increased awareness to educate individuals on the need to protect our environment with the aim of protecting the natural beauty and sustaining humanity.
The World Wide Fund for Nature or WWF for short has worked at reducing our carbon footprint for over 45 years. Even since 1985, the World Wildlife Fund Network has invested over $1.165 billion in more than 11,000 projects. According to the WWF website, their mission is to conserve nature which they are actively doing in 100 countries with 1.2 million members in the United States and close to 5 million globally. There are several ways that everyone can do their part in supporting WWF. Supporters can donate money, adopt a species, or take action and directly help conserve our environment. I am going to discuss WWF’s cause and importance, how they are working to conserve nature, and how all of you can help support the cause.
Working with nonprofit agencies and AmeriCorp V.I.S.T.A. (Volunteer in Service to America), I had the opportunity to learn firsthand at the efforts given within agencies to service the environment and the public by making changes, and implementing reforms on different issues. I found I have a passion for people, legal policies, compliances, and I am very good as a spokes person, or advocate speaking on change. During the time when I was facilitating as a General Education Development instructor for
This essay will review two significant environmental experiences I have encountered exploring the influences of these my life and how these have altered my view on what is environmental sustainability. An examination into these two experiences will follow into reviewing my perspectives on environmental sustainability and how these two experiences influenced this. To conclude a discussion on my role as a teacher and how this will impact myself when in the classroom.
