Mata Hari Mata Hari was born in 1876 and died on 15th October, 1917 through execution. Mata Hari was an essential state name of the Dutch exotic dancer and prostitute. Her real name was Margarete Zelle shot as a spy by the French in 1917 (Hazelton p. 61). Mata was born on 7th August, 1876 in the context of Leeuwarden, Netherlands. Mata Hari was the second child of Adam Zelle and his wife Antje van der Meulen thus the only girl in a family of four boys. The family and society were known for fair-skinned, blonde, and blue-eyed folk. This offered the opportunity for the pretty Hari to be noticeable because of her thick black hair, eyes and tanned olive complexion. This made most of her neighbors to think that she had Javanese or Jewish blood because Java was part of the Dutch East Indies (Mata Hari p. 1). Her father was a successful business person focusing on the transaction of hats in the ear when it was impossible to notice a man in public without a hat. This was vital for the provision of essential services and products to his family. He also had the opportunity to spend quality time with her lovely daughter. According to Mata Hari, her father would sometimes refer to her as "an orchid among buttercups". She received the most special present in the form of a miniature carriage to which two goats were harnessed as a gesture of love and appreciation by her father during her sixth birthday.
