As i’m sure you’ve all heard, Kim Kardashian “lost her $75, 000 diamond earrings in the ocean” but as Kris Jenner ingeniously said “Kim, there's people that are dying”. Kim Kardashian’s meltdown over a pair of earrings is a perfect example of materialism. According to Oxford Dictionaries, materialism is defined as a doctrine where material possessions are considered to have the highest value. In simpler words, materialism is a belief that possessions define success and make an individual happy. Possessions are placed higher in value than spiritual beliefs and family. This belief forms a negative society as it creates a sense of dissatisfaction, loss of relationships and traditions. The Australian institute conducted a survey where they asked a simple question, do you believe that the Australian society is too materialistic? Results indicate that 83% of society believes that Australia is …show more content…
And as soon as those went on sale there were valentine’s day roses everywhere. Special occasions and celebrations have been made materialistic, the core beliefs of the event have been lost. During christmas season we’re all imposed with the simple question, what would you like for christmas? We are surrounded by numerous sales and christmas trees that we consequently get caught up in materialistic notions and miss the fact that christmas is a celebration of the birth of christ. Christmas was once about celebrating Jesus’s life, but due to materialism it has become about presents and santa. Likewise, the origins of valentine's day have been lost in a sea of pink and red merchandise. Valentine’s day originated after St Valentine was martyred for secretly marrying young men after it was forbidden by Emperor Claudius II. Despite this, today society has materialised this occasion and now over 150 million cards are exchanged annually on valentine's
In comparison, knowledge and knowledge creation can be affected by cultural hegemony and ideologies which could call into question its value. Hegemony is the idea that people in power maintain power by influencing societies acceptance of their ideologies rather than using coercion (Rachar 2013, p. 238). In this time and age, this is performed by the control of media resources and Internet opinion (Kumar 2011, p.39). Media suppliers are highly experienced at emotive and persuasive content and reap the financial rewards of ratings (Edwards 2012, p. 69). In Australia, it is perhaps worth considering that a majority of our media, in particular, our newspapers are owned by companies such as Fairfax Media and News Corporation (Finkelstein 2012, p. 58).

Humans are the most social creatures on earth and what better place to express that then Las Vegas. City where aesthetic satisfaction and quality of life is purely expressed with material behaviors and lines between personal value and choice between tangible and intangible life goals and crossed and at times simply arrested. Scholars view materialism as a type of personality trait that involves personal and societal value. This trait is consumption-based and involves human demand for materialistic items to represent personal and social happiness. Associated with western cultures and capitalism, studies about materialism date back to an industrial and post-industrial revolution of 19th century (e.g., Campbell, 1987; McCracken, 1988; McKendrick et al., 1985; Williams, 1982). Richins considered materialism as a system of personal values (e.g. Fournier and Richins, 1991; Richins and Dawson, 1992).
Catharine Maria Sedgwick views materialism as a sin. Every time material items are brought up it is a manipulative or not so good situation; ie: a character is in trouble. Clearly this shows that Sedgwick doesn’t believe in living for material items or the way they are perceived in society. She shows that items can’t buy one love, happiness, or change who one is.
Entertainment started creating a sense of luxury and the middle class was spending more than any earlier generation. People went from living in small houses with a family car to living in big houses with pools and driving luxury cars. Likewise, parents took their kids to private schools and most households owned a personal computer. Materialism became ‘the norm’ and it seemed like everyone was working to get it. Kasser (2002) stated that materialism was not seen as a moral issue but somewhat a fundamental goal of life. For example, pop star Madonna released her hit song Material Girl in 1984 which recognised materialism and in her song she talks about wanting to have n affluent and wealthy life rather than love and romance. Consequently, advertisers responded by portraying the idea that in order to be well, one must be well-off and possessing certain products made you feel affluent. Products like cell phones, computers, designer clothes and foreign cars were most purchased and were seen as something people couldn’t live

Americans are considered to materialistic in nature, money conscious and care less about people that are less well-off economically.

Material culture and non-material culture are two very different ways of living in a society. When comparing two different cultures like the “Bushmen” of the Kalahari Desert (The Gods Must Be Crazy) and American culture, when looking at both these cultures you can tell which one is the material and which one is the non-material culture. The “Bushmen” are very non-material people, they only
These type of people want to show their power, their social status, by having better objects than their peers. Apple's products phenomena is a good exemple that perpetuate this idea: the more recent Iphone they have, the higher they are in the social rank. However, people who construct their indentity by buying products creat a superficial appearence. Meanwhile, they do not work on their real personnality. According to this thought the actor Will Smith also point out that overmuch people spend money they do not own on things they don't even want, because they want to impress people they dislike. Hense, a materialist is makedly more concerned with material goods and have a fewer interest in developping is intellectual, cultural or even spiritual
Materialism, although commonly seen as a harmful characteristic, has the potential to be a beneficial one. The desire for a vast number of possessions has often been tied with the wealthy; however, both wealthy and poor alike have materialistic tendencies and thus, everyone has the potential to live unsustainably. Being materialistic is not what classifies a person as sustainable or unsustainable, it is what that person pursues with their tendencies that does so. If someone wanted to purchase a new vehicle, it would be unsustainable for them to purchase a Bentley or a G-Wagen while there are alternative, energy saving models like the Tesla or Prius. The trend that 's beginning to take hold in the United States is that the more material
Throughout the semester we have covered many different topics during our study of contemporary American culture. We studied topics relating to our everyday lives such as, relationships, life habits, work, and school. The various readings, films, and discussions during class have helped me reflect upon my life. I would like to elaborate and focus on the aspects of this class that directly influence the way I see the world today. Before I took this course my mental image of materialism, happiness, and love were entirely different. I have been exposed to a different perception of our world today that I would have never experienced if I had not taken this course. Our course material helped me analyze how materialism affects me, and it helped
Throughout the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, the main character, Kathy, emphasizes that material items are very important to her. So much, as to say she identifies herself with her possessions, such as her collection. Kathy takes much pride in her possessions throughout her entire life, specifically in her childhood. Moreover, it seems as though many of the students at Hailsham feel the same way. For example, at Hailsham, the students are taught that they are only as good as their art pieces, which enhances the theory that material items are what’s important in life.
• It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery (CANDY) (is the set of food items that are rich in sugar), and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").
