Part 1- Effective Teaching of Mathematics After taking this course I have personally learned so much about mathematics and effective ways on how to teach certain topics in my future classroom. I believe that this course was taught in a way for me to advocate for how I teach myself mathematics. When I knew I was taking this class I was very nervous at first. Mathematics is not my strongest subject so automatically I felt as though this class was going to be a long struggle for me. Once I had a couple class periods I grew more and more comfortable with the math we were learning. I learned to teach math to myself again. I had to teach myself math concepts that I learned way back in elementary school that I completely forgot how to do. In this class we learned a lot about how elementary math is done now a days. Also how now a days there is more than just using the traditional algorithm to solve equations.
I have learned math along with my students at my placement. At my placement I observed my students using the basic operations with distributive property, partial quotients with division and much more. One of the really cool things I learned from my placement students is the box method which is done with multiplication. I at first thought it would be like lattice but it’s not. For example say if you had the numbers 56 and 6, you would draw a rectangle box and split it in the middle. Then you would write 50 in the first column on top and then 6 next to it. The number that goes on the other side is 6. So then you would multiply 50 and 6 to get 300 in the first box. After you would do 6 times 6 with the other box which is 36. Once you have those two numbers you add them together to get the answer. I was never taught to solve multiplication that way so that was something with mathematics that I learned along with my students. I do believe that thoughtful listening is one of the most effective qualities of a good teacher. I practiced this thoughtful listening when I listened to other people participate and show their work in class. I also practiced this thoughtful listening when I taught my unit lesson on math word problems. I took the time while teaching my lessons to listen to every student explain how they got
Being in this class gave me insight on the way that I learn. I’ve had my share of jobs along with schooling and various other learning experiences. Some good, some bad but I can honestly say that I never noticed the pattern on how I learn. Now I know I learn more by being more of a hands on person. Also utilizing my thinking and problem solving skills has helped with my growth. I also found it important to use my reflective observation too. Mostly combining different learning styles have helped me in life to understand the way I learn and the benefits that could come if I use my strengths to further my ambitions.
Reading over the outcomes and objectives, how will the skills developed in this class apply to your chosen career or field of study? If you are “undecided,” how will these skills help you in your future in college and in general?
When I first started this class, I did not expect to learn as much as I did. My sister took the online version of this class and she told me that she barely put an effort in the class to get a good grade. I feel like that is the opposite reaction in my own experience. I think I put lot of effort into this class, but at the same time I did learn a lot from it. I even use the material from this class to do a whole new research paper on the different class because I feel like this class content is very interesting.
Before taking this course I was really excited about what I am going to learn. And I was right! This course is not only interesting but it is also helpful. I have learned that the grade I am having right now is the reflection of my try throughout the entire semester.
When educating students, it is essential to their growth, that teachers have the ability to learn and grow with their students. Every child learns, thinks, and comprehends differently; therefore, the same material should be taught in multiple ways. For example, in my Math 106 class, all students solve the same problem, the teacher then has a few students explain and depict the different ways they received the correct answer. When a student has a difficult time explaining their method, Mrs. Graybeal provides encouragement and guidance; thus. Also, students who are having a difficult time solving the problem used one of the methods provided by a peer to help them comprehend and solve the problem. Math 106 teaches future educators the
What is the most effective way to teach? Can students really learn and fully understand the material teachers convey to them on a day to day basis? According to a middle school mathematics teacher, his methods of teaching the traditional way was not as effective and producing a long-term impact as he would have liked. The article "Never Say Anything a Kid Can Say!" enriches us to the possibility of applying slight gradual modifications to our teaching methods and how we could find ways to utilize that information in the search for more effective teaching methods to encourage students to explain their thinking and become more deeply involved in the classroom discussions, thus developing their questioning skills (Reinhart, 2000). After
This course has affected me in my development as a student by helping ease into returning to school. I started this semester apprehensive because I have been out of school for 17 years. It is tough returning to school especially with technology having changed so much over the years; there was no such thing as online classes in 2000. This course has reacquainted me with my study habits and time management skills. Since the very first lesson in Unit 1, this class has showed me what is available on the Kaplan website for students to use. It also taught me to communicate online and general class information. This information is good for someone like me who is first-time online student. It also has helped me with my time management skills. It made me realize that I could make better use of my time. The adjustments I made in my time management has made me more productive, with balancing two classes, work and my home life.
This course is a new experience for me and it has changed my view of math class. Precalculus so far to me is the hardest class to understand and succeed. However, previous courses have taught me how to use my time wisely and use resources I am given to learn. Taking college classes includes more effort in doing work, listening, and understanding. Deciding to try Dual Credit math was one of the best decisions to have as part of my schedule. These prestigious courses have helped me see life as a college student and the expectations needed to be met.
When taking this class, I got to learn how to think critically, ask the right questions and formulate my thoughts into coherent paragraphs. The presentations gave me a lot of information; the assignments helped me remember and better process what I learned. And finally, the discussions gave me the opportunity to express my ideas, as well as an insight into what my classmates
The most I’ve enjoyed about this class, is my ability to understand several terms or math concepts that I did not completely understand, or learn (from my remembrance) in a mortal environment. Such as, order
I would have to say that the biggest takeaway from this class, was how I learned how to improve my time management. I have to admit that I'm still not the best at handling time, but I'm better then then when I started this class. This class has also helped me not just in the classroom, but in the workforce also. I
Miss Goforth taught me honors math three my sophomore year. Math has always been difficult for me and I was worried from the very beginning. I thought about not taking honors in this course. I even went so far as to try and drop the class after the first day because I felt like I would not be able to do the work. Fortunately for me Miss Goforth did not agree that I should drop her class and she encouraged me to continue in the class. This was one of the hardest classes I had during my high school career. I stayed in learning center and went to tutoring but in the end I was so proud that I faced my fear of honors math three. Miss Goforth pushed me to get out of my comfort zone and ask questions when I needed help. I believe this experience made
I am not very familiar with the common core other than I had to use it as a reference last semester, to create a lesson plan for EDUC 100 class. I did ask some of the teachers I work with if they like or dislike the common core and why. The response was not reassuring. One of the reasons why they did not like the common core was the introduction of Algebra II as a core class requirement for high school graduation. They say not all students need that class in real life. Another reason was that not all states have the same standards, so when the students move to Iowa from another state, it makes it difficult for them to keep up with the classes that are required for them to move on, or they are not academically prepared for the next level.
During the observation time I was placed in a first grade classroom. Walking into the class I began to look around and smile, there was so much color all over the classroom I could not help but feel happier. The teacher immediately stopped the class and told us what they were doing that morning and had each student introduce themselves to us. They went around and stated their name and then went back to their math workbook. When they were finished with their math worksheets they were then able to pick something to do around the room. That included reading on their own, getting to use the iPad, working on the computer, etc. Some students were together while others chose to work on things independently.
Now that this class is over I can honestly say they were good and bad things about it. At first, I was trying to get out of it and change classes, but that was not going to benefit me in any way now or in the future. It has been a learning process for me because I was doing things incorrectly and Dr. Gates tried to help me see that. Old habits are hard to break and I am still learning.
