From the beginning moments in the story of The Outcasts of Poker Flat, starting when there is talk in the town of Poker Flat about plans to rid the community of improper persons gambling main character, John Oakhurst, contained himself and remained cool and collected about the situation he was becoming aware of. Bret Harte’s use of voice portrays a calming effect for the reader that lessens the dramatic upsets of the situations in the story being told. The town of Poker Flat was determined to get rid of a specific four characters who were cause for trouble and harm to the community, the expert gambler John Oakhurst, a prostitute referred to as “The Duchess”, the owner of a brothel whom they called “Mother Shipton”, and a suspected thief and drunk “Uncle Billy”. Throughout the story multiple situations arise among the characters that are cause for distress and concern, but the voice Harte uses to tell the story reduces the concern of the readers.
Hamlet will forever be known as a classic example of a morally ambiguous character. He is to choose between avenging his father's death, or standing back and doing nothing, thus a cycle of death and questionable actions creates his moral ambiguity. In Bret Harte's "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," four criminals in the Old West are exiled from their town, and the outcasts' morals are challenged. Throughout the story, the characters change, and the reader can not decipher if they are good or evil.
The buggers from Orson Scott Cards Enders game and subsequent novels, at first appear to be bug eyed monsters, a science fiction cliché. However as the story develops it becomes apparent that the buggers are much more than just a cliché, they develop as a sentient species, they undergo a transformation from varelse, “the true alien” (speaker 34) into raman “the stranger that we recognise as human but of another species”. (34) As this transformation occurs Ender learns a great deal from the buggers, in this manner card illustrates that there is much one can learn from the transformation of varelse to raman.

Ted Kooser always writes his poem from his past experiences and life events. In this poem, he is using the birthday card to show the reader one of the important person appears in his life and what did that person do to touches his heart. This poem is about the love from his aunt and how the poet expresses it on a short length poem.
