In the exposition of the novel, Max has Low self-esteem. For instance, in the first sentence of the book On page 1, our protagonist, Max says “I never really had a brain until Freak came along and let me borrow his for a while.”. This excerpt shows that Max has low self-esteem because he says that he never had a brain until Freak came along, later in the story. Another example is on page 2 Max says “ I invented games like kick-boxing and kick-knees.”. Clearly, this excerpt shows that Max has low self-esteem because being short-tempered, as Max is, is proven a sign of low self-esteem. Another example of max having low self-esteem is on page 3 when Max says “ It's more of the way Maxwell resembles him”. This excerpt shows that Max has low self-esteem because he makes himself think that his grandparents are afraid of him. My last excerpt about max having low self-esteem at the beginning of the story is on page 5 when Max says “That summer, let's see, I'm still living in the basement, my own private down under, in the little room Grim Built for me there. Glued up this cheap paneling, right? It sort of buckles away from the concrete cellar walls, a regular ripple effect, but do I complain about the crummy paneling or the rug that smells like low tide? I do not. Because I like it in the down under, got the place all to myself and no fear of Gram - sticking her head in the door and saying Maxwell dear, what are you doing? Not that I ever do much of anything. ”. This excerpt shows
Clint Smith is a writer, teacher, and doctoral candidate in Education at Harvard University with a concentration in Culture, Institutions, and Society. Smith Clint wrote a poem called “Something You should Know.” The poem is about an early job he had in a Petsmart. The poet allows the readers into his personal life, but before he had trouble opening up to people and his work. Moreover, Clint wrote an insight in the poem about relying in anything to feel safe and he says it is the most terrifying thing any person can do.
The poem “To This Day” written by Shane Koyczan, the symbolism is the black things grabbing the kid. This is showing that words do hurt and it stays with you this is shown through the whole story of the pain and suffering of the kid. This is said " who used to say that rhyme sticks and stones as if broken bones hurt more than the names we got called" this is showing word do hurt and the black things grabbing him is showing that like a broken bone it still hurts over time just like words do. With this evidence it shows that if you don't want to be called that don't say it at all.
Poets have the power to present their perspectives of the human experience through their poetic voice. Gwen Harwood, Judith Wright, and Bruce Dawe, all Australian poets have all expressed common ideas expressed by their unique poetic voice. They also speak for those who have no voice, such as the soldiers in Bruce Dawe’s poem Homecoming and in Gwen Harwood's poem Mother Who Gave Me Life where she gives a voice to the Mothers. A key theme resinating through all of these poets poems would be their common ideas on society and the role of a mother.
If we only judged him on is looks, we might assume he is this huge mean guy. The first time we him he wasn’t the best kid “until I persuaded him otherwise”. This shows that he likes to use his legs and feet to tell people off. Max also was called “kicker”. This also shows he mostly likes to talk with is hands and feet instead of his mouth. However, we later see him as a hero when he saves loretta from Kenny Kane. This confirms our thoughts by showing that Max is not as we thought and he’s caring and
An example is on page 86, “ I’m still afraid of Erik. I’m afraid of Arthur now, too.” Paul is scared of his brother Erik, the antagonist, and is now scared of his friend Arthur. Erik has harassed Paul in the past, and Paul knows he needs to end it. He knows his parents won’t do anything to fix it, he needs to stand up for himself. But he doesn’t have the courage to do it. Paul is angry at himself for that. Therefore making the low self esteem issue. Another example is when Paul gets kicked off the Lake Windsor soccer team because of his eyes. The Lake Windsor school has to have insurance for all the players, without it, they lose the program. Paul put up a fight but knew he had failed. He didn’t argue after that and just sat there and cried on the field. Paul then declined to be the team manager because he was a player. Paul gave up with his dream and was weak in the
We have all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect”. In supporting Malcolm’s 10,000-hour rule, this occurs when a person has “practiced” at their craft for more than 10,000 hours, making them greater than what they were, to begin with. It is a proven fact that the more people work and study hard at one particular subject they become better with age, like wine or cheese. The best example of this is famous classical composers were found that, in almost every case, the composers did not create their greatest work until they had been composing for at least ten years (www.newyorker.com, 2016). This is also seen with athletes who start practicing from a young age, and until they are older and more defined physically and mentally will achieve greatness in events like the Olympics that push their bodies beyond what humans are capable of because of the extensive training that they have had all their life. This also applies to children and their schooling. The average school year in the U.S. is 180 days with an average school day of 6.7 hours according to government figures. Along with the mass amounts of homework that they have to attend to leaves no room for a child to explore their own interests that apply to the real world. To that they may find what they will become great at as an
Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
Max struggles with a lot such as his height and his trouble with learning. One main thing he struggles with is problems with his father. Max has never really known his father. When news about his father’s past start coming back up it is hard for Max to deal with them. Max has always been bullied because of his father and his struggles with learning. Bullies from Max’s school say, “‘Maxi Pad! Maxi Pad! Ask him quick about his dad! Killer Kane! Killer Kane! Had a kid who got no brain!’” (Philbrick 76). Freak was always accepted Max. That helped Max cope when he got called to the principal's office, where he received news that was not easy for him to handle. The principal uttered to Max, ‘“A request from your father. Maxwell, your father wants to know if-”’ (Philbrick 84). Max goes on to reply, “‘ I don’t want to hear it!
Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I
Ted Kooser, the thirteenth Poet Laureate of the United States and Pulitzer Prize winner, is known for his honest and accessible writing. Kooser’s poem “A Spiral Notebook” was published in 2004, in the book Good Poems for Hard Times, depicting a spiral notebook as something that represents more than its appearance. Through the use of imagery, diction, and structure, Ted Kooser reveals the reality of a spiral notebook to be a canvas of possibilities and goes deeper to portray the increasing complexities in life as we age.
In the poem, “Backwards,” by Warsan Shire the poem dramatizes the conflict between the long for the past and the hatred of the present. This poem highlights the rough situation that the speaker is in as well as a need for what life was like before. One can easily see that the speaker in this poem is a child in the family, because of the context of line 3, “that’s how we bring Dad back.” This is referring to the longing for their dad before they were in the situation they currently are in. Although, there is not line to line rhyme scheme the poem is written backwards at the beginning of the second stanza. This is likely showing the reader the need for the past and emphasizing the importance of the current situation. The overall theme of this poem is showing what life was once like and what it is now.
Self esteem is how an individual evaluates their worth as a person. It is not a person’s talents or abilities or how they are seen by others It is seen as the feeling of not being good enough. However, that does not mean people with high self esteem view themselves as

The death penalty was reinstated in the United States in 1977, and since then murderers and rapist have been executed for the violent and harsh crimes they were found guilty of committing. In the past thirty years over 1,200 prisoners have been put to death for crimes in which they were convicted. The government of each state executes these prisoners by way of the electric chair, gas chamber, and the most common way lethal injection. A survey, from the Death Penalty Information Center, shows that over half of the citizens in the United States support the death sentence. Some supporter of the death penalty may even believe that sparing the guilty shows them mercy and the victims’ families no justice. If
