Maya Angelou “ I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. (Angelou). Maya Angelou was a famous African American author and poet. She is best known for her memoir, I know why the caged bird sings. Maya Angelou was born April 4 1928 in St.Louis Missouri.Growing up she had a rough childhood. Her parents got a divorce when she was very young ,and her and her brother, Bailey had to go live their grandmother in Stamps,Arkansas. Around the age of seven, Angelou was sexually assaulted by her mothers boyfriend on a visit. When she returned back to Arkansas she spent years as a virtual mute. Maya Angelou moved to San Francisco, California. She had won a scholarship to study acting and dance at the California Labor School. Later on she moved to Cairo, Egypt where she was associate editor of the Arab observer. “Ms.Angelou also contributed articles to The Ghanaian Times and was featured on the Ghanaian Broadcasting Corporation programing in Accra Ghana.” (World Biography). She became inspired to write at a young age around the time she was mute. She fell in love with the language, “She read books by inspiring black authors such as Langston Huges as well as canonical writers such as William Shakespeare and Edgar Allen Poe.”(Poetry Foundation). When Angelou was twelve she met a black women , Ms.Flowers and she was educated and got her to speak again. In eighth-grade Angelou graduated at the top of her class. Maya Angelou faced many obstacles to become what she is known for today. Such as being raped at a young age,overcoming being mute, and feeling responsible for being raped.
