Many people, tribes and nations in history have had an army. In order to have an army, a nation has to have soldiers. In history soldiers have come from all different walks of life. Looking at soldiers in the world today, they are not given the same respect and love that the soldiers of ancient times were given. No matter what the country soldiers were usually revered and looked up to and made to be heroes. Looking back at pre-Columbian Mexico, we see that Mayan and Aztec cultures are not any different. They both love their warriors and they show their respect by giving them privileges that the average citizen did not have. That respect also spread beyond their own culture and into their enemies land. To understand this I wanted to compare and contrast these two fascinating warrior classes. The Aztec arrived in Mexico sometime in the 1200’s A.D. historians believe they “embellished their history in an attempt to justify their standing and emphasize their links to Toltec lore.” They did not begin their empire until about 1325 A.D. The Aztecs would expand and build their empire until Hernan Cortes arrived in 1517. For nearly 200 years the Aztec were in power and over that 192 years they were able to build their empire to 5 million people. The quickness in which Aztec Empire’s expanded proves it was one of the greatest empires ever. Both the Mayan and Aztec empires came in Pre-Columbian Mexico. This is very significant for warriors. Pre-Columbian Mexico honored and adored their soldiers. Before Cortes arrived soldiers were able to do a lot with very little. After he came, technology made it difficult for Indians to compete. This may have also made it difficult for Indian Soldiers to be as heralded in post Columbian
