I have chosen to the Mayo Clinic to research for the Capstone Project. The Mayo Clinic is a nonprofit organization. They are committed to clinical practice, education and research, providing expert, whole-person care to everyone who needs healing. There are several reasons for choosing the Mayo Clinic. They have locations in Arizona, Florida, Minnesota or the Mayo Clinic Health System. The Mayo Clinic is not for profit, provides doctors in various specialties, recognized as a “Diversity Inc. Top Hospital and Health System” for the last five years in a row. The diversity allows for the team to collaborate with other doctors to obtain viewpoints, which will help provide the patient with the best care option. Making the patient priority is their primary value. The Mayo Clinic supports their mission and values by offering resources from national organizations, such as ClinicalTrials.gov, Mayo Clinic Research Information Center, and the National Cancer Institute. The Mayo Clinic conducts different types of research at their campuses in Arizona, Florida, and Minnesota. The Mayo Clinic covers several areas of research through laboratories, core resources, centers and programs, clinical trials and various departments/divisions. The research is based on the findings after treating a patient. If there is an opportunity to advance the patient’s care, the Mayo Clinic will conduct “basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological research to develop new and improved diagnostic tools, medications, devices, treatment protocols and more” (Buckles, 2013). The Mayo Clinic has conducted research on advanced liver diseases, aging and dementia, allergic diseases, Alzheimer’s, prostate cancer, and the outcomes of anesthesia by collaborating with different scientist in the labs to establish translational research. They also have several clinical fellowships for hepatology- “the study, prevention, diagnosis and management of diseases that affect the liver, gallbladder biliary tree and pancreas” (Robertson, 2014).
