Chad Bagwell, a 2005 graduate of Pickens High School and native of the Jerusalem area, said in a phone interview Monday that he might be this generation’s Chris McCandless, (the main character of the book/movie Into the Wild). When it’s pointed out that McCandless died of starvation in the Alaskan wilderness and the account of his life was written by someone else after the young man’s body was found, Bagwell corrects slightly saying, he wants to “almost” be this generation’s Chris McCandless. A self-proclaimed “country boy” who knows hunting, fishing and edible plants, Bagwell is hoping for online votes to send him to Siberia where he will survive off the land through the brutal Russian winter for nine months, all filmed as part of a Russian …show more content…
Since graduating from Pickens High, the 30-year-old Bagwell has moved from Pickens to Alabama and now works in a factory but is proud of growing up in the Jerusalem area. Bagwell first heard of the reality show on television in a story that said everything including murder would be legal among contestants, who are expected to survive nine months among wolves, bears and the elements which could see temperatures as low as 40 degrees Celsius. A little research, however, turned up the part about murder is not exactly true, all laws still exist and Bagwell said he doesn’t anticipate worse than a possible fist-fight from the contestants. Though a fair number of former military and special operations people are among those vying for the nine month chance at serious prize money. Even if other contestants aren’t looking to gun him down, Bagwell said the elements most certainly can be lethal, especially to a lifelong southerner who admits he has never been anywhere really cold. “God willing I will come back in one piece,” he said on a Youtube video made to attract votes. “God not-willing, oh
¨When Chris established his camp at the deserted bus, he is ecstatic. He writes that this is his final and greatest adventure.(pg 42)¨ This shows that Christopher McCandless was willing to do what he had his vision on, and he was successful, but he wanted to
In the beginning of the book “Into The Wild” by Krakauer, Krakauer admits that his bias opinion on McCandless will show throughout the book. This could be seen through descriptions the actions of McCandless. Krakauer portrays McCandless as noble due to his description of the decisions and encounters McCandless faces.
I agree with him leaving, i believe it was mainly a thing about finding himself and enjoying time alone. ex: “he’d been in the habit of taking it on extended solo road trips when classes weren’t in session…” (pg. 21)
Cole finds himself banished to a remote island in Alaska by himself for a year. Cole obviously does not understand the severity of the situation that he is placed under. He takes all the given tools and the given shed for granted and he burns the shelter that was there for him. He is later attacked by a bear. This bear does not directly attack Cole and it does not kill him. Cole aggravated the bear and threw a
In the book, "Into the Wild" by Jon Krakauer, Chris McCandless wanted to disappear from the American society. McCandless disappeared and traveled through the country by himself. In 1990, a group of Alaskan hunters discovered his body in the Denali National Park. Chris McCandless has a INFP personality type because he was an open-minded, humane, and curious person. People who have the INFP type, typically are in search of their purpose in life.
In “To Build a Fire,” a man sets out into the freezing cold alone except for his dog. He is confident that he can simply walk to the next campsite, and bring along a few survival tools. However, he soon falls
Life is never easy, no matter how hard we try to short cut and escape the inevitable difficulties. After College is when life sets in, when work becomes a necessity and we all begin to find a place to settle down. People respond differently to different situations. Some of us embrace the freedom and the ability to earn money and spend money indiscriminately. Others crumple under the social pressures placed on us. Christopher McCandless is a perfect example. Settling down and raising a family, providing for that family and creating a sustainable lifestyle are important and high stress things that we all must deal with if we are to enjoy the finer things in life. Chris totally abandoned that, he gave away all of his possessions; even
Participants are forced to kill one another until only one player is left (covered in pages 19 - 20). Already, it is easy to notice the resemblances between the two
The man was given advice from an “old-timer” that it is unwise to travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below zero but the man smiled and ignored the warning determined to make his journey (London 382). Because of his ignorance the un-named protagonist arrogantly thought of the “old-timer” as acting womanish, strongly believing that any man who was a man could travel alone (London 382). The man would rather listen to himself than the wise words of someone who is more experienced in this type of terrain. Because the man had no previous personal experience traveling in the Yukon in such cold, he was unable to determine the severity of the journey he was about to take. He did not understand how hostile nature can be and his disdainful attitude toward it’s forces exemplifies that. At the beginning of the story, cold made no impression on the man. “He perceived it as something weak that it was easy to overcome. Fifty degrees below zero stood for a bite of frost that hurt and that must be guarded against by the use of mittens, ear flaps, warm moccasins, and thick socks. Fifty degrees below zero was to him just precisely fifty degrees below zero”
was going to get a lot of money and some people would kill their own family to get that
He thinks very pragmatically about low temperatures, so “he was keenly observant”, he knows to react efficiently and stay confident. He actually manages to keep his self-control for a long time despite the many vicissitudes he meets. However, this lack of sensitivity leads him to his doom since he does not know how to stay humble in front of the indomitable elements nature is. He refused to listen to the advices of the old man from Sulphur Creek who had recommended him to not face the cold alone. However, he does not appear to be entirely a novice of the extreme cold either. He is aware of the danger of the cold. Many times he thinks he has never experience such a cold temperature before, but still he lacks of judgement and continues his adventure, believing his thoughts and skills will be enough to live through the
The character will survive if he knows how to listen. He was warned by an old man in the Sulphur Creek not to travel in the extreme temperature of Yukon, which temperatures drops down to seventy-five below zero. His imprudence leads him to his death. Listening is an important factor of making a right decision in life. It helps us to be a better thinker. Most of our mistakes in life happened when we start to ignore little things. In addition, the character should survive if he uses his dog companion’s help. We know that dogs have a great natural feeling. They can sense danger and have good tracking ability,
Reality television shows have been a craze in America over the last few years. Shows like Survivor, Big Brother, The Bachelor, Fear Factor have been flooding the channels. Survivor is not only flooding the channels, but also stands out in its context and its ability to survive the ratings. Survivor is a reality game show, where sixteen contestants are dropped on an island or a desolate location and have to learn to survive in nature and the elimination votes of their fellow castaways. A show generally consists of one award challenge where the two different teams compete for an award and an immunity challenge where they see which team has to go to tribal council to vote a member off. The challenge these contestants must endure is "how to
The film begins as young man named Salim appears to be locked in bathroom as the Celebrity host Prem asks a young, impoverished contestant named Jamal if he is ready to begin playing ‘the game’. Salim loads pistol as the door breaks down and gunfire is heard. Meanwhile Prem welcomes Jamal to show he is competing on: Who wants to be a Millionaire?. Suddenly, it cuts to a police constable torturing Jamal, asking for his name and how he cheated on the game. It begins flipping from Jamal’s introduction on the show to the inspector interrogating Jamal about how he must have cheated. However, Jamal defiantly says he did not cheat, but instead knew all of the answers because he somehow learned each answer through the events of his life, leading up to the game.
It was a cold and foggy morning, less than 3 degrees, but in the town of Sylvester this was considered warm, Sylvester was a town unlike others because it was home to the greatest adventurers of all time: Billy the Bold, Jumbo the Gibberish, Collin the cold butt and miss and Mr Appleby. And this is where our story begins. Jeff was out picking apples with his dog Dingelberry.
