McDonaldization is the standardizing of our everyday life. The first principle is efficiency, which means that we want to do things as quickly as possible. The second principle is predictability, meaning that everything is the same from one place to the next. The third principle is calculability, where there is more focus on producing a large quantity of something and less focus on the quality. The fourth principle is non-human technology, that involves taking away skills from humans and putting them into machines. Some positive outcomes of McDonaldization are that people can get most anything they want instantly. Another advantage is that if you go to China, and get a Big Mac you expect to get the same quality and the burger to tastes the
McDonaldization is a term used by sociologist George Ritzer in his book “The McDonaldization of Society” (1993). Ritzer uses McDonaldization to describe a sociological phenomenon that is happening in our society. He explains that it becomes demonstrated when a culture adopts the principles of a fast-food restaurant. Essentially, the term McDonaldization is the process of rationalization. When Ritzer titled his book “The McDonaldization of Society” he is actually referring to the rationalization of society. Thus, the use of the word “McDonaldization” simply indicates that the fast food restaurant is one of many great examples of rationality. Ritzer discusses five components of McDonaldization: efficiency, predictability, control,
Ray kroc named mcdonald's from his friends Dick and Mac Mcdonald. Ray opened the first mcdonald's in 1955 in Des Plaines, Illinois. In 1959 the 100th mcdonald’s opened in chicago. In 1963 there was one billion hamburgers sold. Also opened its 500th location.
McDonaldization is a process that affects various sectors and is a symbol of American culture that is efficient, controlled, calculability, and predictability. This item I picked for the kitchen/foods list is the Keurig, which is a coffee maker. It is fast and convenient with how it saves people time from getting up earlier in the morning before work or the start of their day to make coffee. Therefore, you then will get more sleep which can lead you to a better mood and have you actually want to get the day going. It is also more simplified by already having the pre-made K-cups pods ready for you to just put in the top and press a button rather than scooping actual coffee out of a bag into the cups, adding water and waiting for it to boil.
As claimed by George Ritzer in his article The McDonaldization of Society, “McDonald’s has succeeded because it offers consumers, workers, and managers efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control” (Ritzer, 12). These four dimensions are the major components of the model of McDonaldization, a term that Ritzer defines as “the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world” (Ritzer, 1). The first component, efficiency, is the “optimum method for getting from one point to another” (Ritzer, 12). Efficiency focuses on creating the optimum method where the food is not only quickly prepared, but also quickly consumed. Calculability is the second component of the model of McDonaldization, which places emphasis on the quantity
The term was used to show how the principles of the fast food industry have come to dominate all parts of American society and the rest of the world. The main idea of McDonaldization is the process of taking a task and breaking it down into smaller tasks. This is repeated until all tasks have been broken down to the smallest possible level. The result is an efficient and logical sequence of tasks that can be completed in the same way almost every time to produce the desired outcome. What we can learn from my photo from a social sense is that McDonaldization has caused an over rationalization in society. This photo shows how we as people have continued to find new and innovate ways to break down task make them more efficient, predictable, reliable and use less human technology. This photo shows how subtly McDonaldization has affected every facet of our lives. Our culture continues to value efficiency, predictability, and quantity. Especially young people specifically college students having limited amount time in their day having things be time efficient and cost effective come as second nature to us. Also, compare this photo to what happens when you enter a place like Moe’s Grill. Workers shout welcome to Moe’s when you enter. The workers shout out a phrase like this because they are merely following a corporate script. This the major concept of Mcdonlzation following a script of efficiency in order to make your business operate as effective a possible. I think the biggest take away from this photo is the idea of McDonaldization of universities. The idea of focused curricula, delivering degrees in a fast-track pick and mix fashion to satisfy all tastes. Rather than focusing and continuing to work with students to expand make sure they understand the knowledge being presented to them many colleges are forced to fast track education to hit preferred profit margins

Since its release in the year 1993, ‘The McDonaldization of Society’, has gone through various revisions and republications. Its on the context of the observations made by Ritzer, that the argument of the entire process of McDonaldization finds its place; which states that the concepts and principles followed by fast food restaurant chains, are rapidly taking over majority of the sectors in the American economy, and may dominate over the rest of the world (Ritzer, 2004, pg1).
McDonaldization is a terminology created by George Ritzier a sociologist in the book “The McDonaldization of Society” (1993). Ritzier explains on how the modern society is adopting the physiognomies of the fast food industry. McDonaldization is a reconceptualization of rationalization, or moving from traditional to rational modes of thought, and scientific management. McDonaldization has become a way life and it’s affecting society in all aspects of life and not only the food industry, from Health care, education, and the workplace. The reason for this is because society is moving at a faster and a moderate pace.
Have you ever thought about what goes into the food of Mcdonald’s? Sure there food might taste good, but Mcdonald’s has artificial ingredients which can be toxic to your health. Also there is animal cruelty in Mcdonald’s and people who eat at Mcdonald’s frequently are more likely to gain more weight than people who don’t eat at Mcdonald’s. Therefore, people must not eat Mcdonald’s.
Technologies have had a great impact in society, since there is innovation in software and hardware, we can say that technologies are moving the world, and that as time passes there are new tools for better communication... but is actually better? The society is surrounded by new technologies, currently, of every 10 young 7 between 16 and 24 years are connected to the network at least once a week. The most used program is the Messenger (instant messaging programs), which constitutes a means of communication which prolongs the relations between people, the efficacy of the McDonaldization to the reduction of time and effort that mediate between a desire or need and our satisfaction. The irrationality of the McDonaldization is that people
In the realm of sociological theories Max Weber characterized several essential characteristics of bureaucratic forms of organization. A bureaucracy is a system in which important decisions are made by the officials rather than the representatives. These essential characteristics did not just fade away but were later applied and somewhat enhanced by George Ritzer in his theory to McDonaldization in The McDonaldization of Society. Not only did these sociological thinkers like Weber and Ritzer show how the characteristics apply to one another but also noted the discontents with bureaucracy and was evidenced in the literary works such as Kafka’s “Before the Law” and also Melville’s “Bartelby”.
McDonaldization of Society is a term created by a sociologist George Ritzer to define what is occurred in our society. Basically, McDonaldization is the method of rationalization, although taken to great levels. Rationalization is a sociological term that basically implies or explain the substitution of coherently steady guidelines for habitual or unreasonable rules. One of the crucial parts of McDonaldization is that any assignment can and must be efficient.
On Wednesday, August 23rd, I observed a local McDonald’s operations, services, and customers. Based off of my observations, I can confirm George Ritzer’s points on the ideas of McDonaldization, being efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control, that enable not only this restaurant but our society to be rationalized. Even so, this restaurant exemplified Ritzer’s research on irrationalities. Using these points, I will demonstrate exactly how Franklin Street’s McDonald’s truly fits into Ritzer’s ideas and ways of thinking.
In the book of “The Mcdonaldization of Society” by a sociologist George Ritzer, the term Mcdonaldization is used. Mcdonaldization occurs when a business such as Ikea, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Wal-mart, Bed bath and beyond, etc. possesses the characteristics of a fast-food restaurant, like McDonalds. Max Weber used the word “bureaucracy” to represent the direction of Mcdonaldization changing the society; with today’s present society, the concept of Mcdonaldization is gaining in consideration of different aspects, such as a culture. The cultural version of a McDonaldization thesis is the recent idea of the world wide homogenization of cultures. The process of it could be summarized in a way in which the fast food principles, are dominating more and more sectors of American society, and as well as of the rest of the world.
Although many people visit fast-food restaurants every day, they may be unaware of the detailed thought that is made towards the structuring of the business and its employees. Many times, we are on a constant rush to purchase our food and to quickly leave. Within the last few years, restaurants have taken a note of this, and have even developed what is known as the ‘Drive-Thru’. In today’s modern society, one thing people seem to be short of is time. We go in restaurants and literally expect ‘fast’ food. Restaurants like McDonald’s have developed ways to decrease the amount of time for which people have to wait for food; thus catching the attention of many Americans going about their day with limited time. McDonald’s developed innovative ways to configure the methods for which its food should be made. Their developments are what have placed them in the top spot, where today their franchises are globally recognized. Today they hold the record for the largest chain of hamburger fast-food restaurants in the world. McDonald’s was originally founded by two brothers named Dick and Mac McDonald. Having observed their method of food production, Ray Kroc now owner of McDonalds, was stunned by their effectiveness. The brothers had developed a system of concentrating on only a few items—hamburgers, fries and drinks.
