Meals on wheels was the other nonprofit organization that I analyzed in my leadership style and theories overview. I choose meals on wheels because I discovered that there target audience is the elderly population in the United States. The biggest difference with this nonprofit compared to the other nonprofits I have discussed is that they operate with volunteers that do a variety of different jobs from preparing the meals, delivering them, serving them, to helping in the office and even visiting to make sure they senior is safe (Meals, 2015). When the research I conducted showed how many seniors are living alone across the country it was truly shocking with are 25 percent and from the 25 percent 15 percent are unable to drive (Meals, 2015). He really enjoyed just having someone around even for just a few minutes because he lived alone and was basically alone all the time because his family lived out of state and he was unable to drive. John actually was pretty self-sufficient when I visited he stood up answered the door and invited me in. One of the great things that happened when I visited was that I was able to hear his past life experiences and how Meals on Wheels has changed his life. With this experience I concluded that Meals on Wheels Association of America encompassed a leadership style called servant leadership theory. Servant Leadership theory argues that a philosophy of leadership should represent a servant first and a leader after (Wolinski, 2010, p.3). This idea is revolutionary to the nonprofit sector because it focuses on the importance of actually serving the community rather than just running an organization.
