This section is all about the Imperialism rush that is happening all over the world in this era. In total, this era lasted about 44 years (1870- 1914). The meaning of imperialism is the way one country extends its influence and power through diplomacy or military force. This was done on the continent of Africa (and other places, but Africa was the main one). European power was fluctuating at this point, as several countries in Europe flocked to grab portions of Africa for the natural resources and to extend power. Their goal was to gain the most wealth and to have the most territory. Having more territory and claiming valuable parts of the continent was a symbol of power. In Africa in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, imperialism was present and growing. The main countries involved in the imperialism in Africa were the French, German, and Great Britain. The French’s empire was mainly in North and West Africa while Britain’s colonies were scattered throughout the continent. Germany ruled over such countries as Tanganyika, Togoland, and Cameroon, until their defeat in World War I.

To them, these newfound lands were an opportunity to expand their power and exploit further resources.
