The word Lottery conjures up feeling of enthusiasm, riches, joys, and comfort. Although this may be true in our everyday lives, the same cannot be said for the short story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson. The meaning of the word Lottery as it is used in the story is the exact opposite of what it means to us. In the story, the townspeople gather around once a year for the lottery and a black box is placed in the center of all of the townspeople. Then, the men of the families come up and draw a slip of paper. All but one of the papers is blank. The paper that isn't blank has a big dot drawn on and the man who gets the one with the dot, his wife and children must draw until one person ends up with the dot. After it is narrowed down
