Blood pressure is defined as the force of the blood against the artery wall. If ones blood pressure is too high or too low it may cause cardiovascular problems in the future. When blood pressure is measured, a cuff is placed on your arm, we will add pressure to this cuff to temporarily stop the blood flow. With a stethoscope we will then listen to your blood flow. By doing this we get two measurements, the first is systolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the reading when the blood is being contracted by the heart, or when the heart contracts, and diastolic pressure, measured when the heart relaxes.

Blood pressure is expressed in millimeters of mercury, the first reading is Systolic pressure, and is always the higher of the readings.

If one or both are smokers I would strongly advise them to stop, I would recommend that they try to limit the stress that they are exposed to each day and I would recommend a healthier diet and exercise.

When changing up the diet I would tell them no alcoholic beverages, and no added salt, plus to drink lots of water to flush the body of its waste. I would also suggest a heart healthy exercise routine, like swimming or cycling, if they are extremely over weight lower impact exercises like these are best. Any exercise that keeps the heart rate up for an extended period of time is ideal for those with high blood pressure.
