To feed 316 million Americans, meat has been an important part of our diet and nutrition segment of U.S agriculture. In 2012, total meat and poultry production reached more than 93 billion pounds. There are 6,278 federal inspected meat and poultry slaughtering and processing plants in the U.S (Harrison, 2015). American men eat on average 6.9 ounces of meat per day and women eat 4.4 ounces. Even though we consumed and processed extensive amount of meats for consumption, we tend to overlook important facts on why eating meat is wrong. According to Doctor Wein, Chief of Science Communication Branch in National Institutes of Health (NIH), “eating red meat on regular basic may shorten your life span”. He wrote this article in attempt to show …show more content…
I had a harder time to breath when walking, even harder when running. Next I would snore during sleep time and sweats without even doing anything. My body was place on burden by the excessive intake of red meats. It hard to go places when your heart can not pump fast enough bloods to get to your muscles and lungs in order to get your body moving. As a result, many people die from heart diseases which is the number case of death in United States According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in 2012 acquired health statistics. In addition, “the International Diabetes Foundation rated the United States as one of the highest nation in developing world in terms of 10.75 percent of adults , which is one out of eight adults suffers from type 1 or type 2 diabetes in 2015” (Lisa, 2015).
Next, Doctor Wein describe in his paper a study performed by Dr. Frank Hu of Harvard University of Public Health with his research team whose conducted a large sample studies to see the association between mortality and red meat intake to support his opposition. “They studied over 37,000 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (began in 1986 to 2012) and over 83,000 women from The Nurses’ Health Study which began around 1980s” (Harrison,2012). These participants were in health states at the start of the study which was free of cardiovascular disease and cancer risks. Next, the participants were required to fill out a food questionnaire every four
Growing up, many people believe that is necessary to consume meat on a daily basis in order to survive. However, animal products and junk food are not necessary in order to survive and be healthy. Animal products and junk food are marketed heavily in the media. The government also plays a large role in supporting both the production of animal products and junk food. The purpose of this Ted Talk was to inform the general public the dangers of eating too many animal products and too much junk food and to persuade the public to change their diets to better their health and the environment.
Essential's work, as well as that of Dr. Colin Campbell, whose studies of the primarily vegetable-based diets in China show they have fewer diseases such as cancer. That is the type of disease that skyrockets when patients begin eating huge amounts of red meat. (It is true that, among other things, paleontologists have shown that men tend to be meat-eaters, however, when you look at the history of man and meat, you begin to see a corollary between the cattle industry's use of performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids to get their products to market faster and, in the meantime, the customer, faces and eats many useless drugs, for most people. There are some people who do need them, but they are a very rare minority and are monitored by physicians.)
. . 30 to 40 percent of all cancers are caused by diet”(Davis and Melina 32). The consumption of meat has also been liked to Osteoporosis; “When you eat meat, your blood becomes acidic . . .In order to balance all the acidity, your bones come to the rescue by releasing some of their minerals”(Silverstone 17). “Diets”, in America revolve heavily around meat and dairy products; no wonder cancer is the second leading cause of death.
Typically speaking, most Americans base their diets around meat. As the greatest source of protein, it is consumed at nearly every meal, even in between meals, with the exception of vegans, vegetarians, and other dietary abstainers. Meat is an intrinsic part of American culture— it’s on everything. Pizza. Hamburgers. Hot dogs. Barbeque. Meat is even on salads. Most of this meat comes from livestock farms throughout the country. Bred, fed, and raised to be the best tasting; many times, it is pumped full of hormones and chemicals or forced into “all natural” and “organic” diets. There is, however, a new source of meat emerging— roadkill. Hundreds of thousands of vehicular accidents over the past few years have forged a growing
The red meat studied included beef, pork, lamb and other processed meats. Resent publications detailed the results of the study that began following their participants in 1982. It showed that those with high red meat consumption had a 30-40% increased risk of colon cancer and those who consumed high amounts of processed meat were at a 50% higher risk. High red meat consumption was defined at 3 oz. for men and 2 oz. for women daily. High processed meat consumption was defined at 1 oz. eaten 5-6 times a week for men and 2-3 for women. Even the consumption of white meat, like chicken, showed a 3% increase in risk verses those with a vegetarian
The world has a need for meat, and it is almost obsessive. Most cultures typically consume some sort of domesticated animal in agriculture. Whether it is cows, chicken, lamb, deer, turkey, or fish, many people are not educated to the fact that the alternative diets are better for their health. There are different animal products for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hundreds if not thousands of diverse chain restaurants dedicated to meat consumption. There are also many different holidays around the world such as Thanksgiving and Christmas where meat is consumed. With affordable prices and an acquired taste, it is likely to be a lifelong habit. There are vast miles of subsidized agricultural land dedicated to the cultivation of animals. According to Amir Khan, staff writer for U.S.News, reporting on the American Meat Institute, Americans consume, “57 pounds more meat than they were in the 1950s”(Khan).
For example, Simon (2013) states, “...high consumption levels damage our health and costs billions of dollars to treat.” Simon portrays that eating a wide variety of meat is no longer healthy for individuals. Moreover, it can age and promote growth amongst individuals quicker. Some effects have even gone as far to be as detrimental as cigarette and tobacco use. As the public generally becomes more and more aware of such concerns, there are two possibilities. The first being that people decide to not change what they eat, and therefore, suffer from the costs that come along with a multitude of health problems. The other alternative, is for an individual to decide to change their diet. In turn, the businesses that function around serving meat, will have to restructure and remarket to the general
I am really concerned about our eating habits in America, and I am beginning to wonder if the meat industry is negatively affecting America 's health and well-being. During this course I have efficiently held that the meat industry is in high demand, because we have dramatically increased the amount of meat consumed over the last twenty years. My understanding of this topic is that animals such as cows and chickens are being mistreated; this due to them living in small compartments, and in unhealthy conditions. I also think that a lot of bacteria is being created out of the unsanitary conditions in which these animals are kept, This bacteria ends up in our food and is harmful to us. A reason why this topic became very appealing to me is because I grew up in a small town in Mexico. My family’s eating habits were very different from the ones here in the United States. We raised our own cattle and chickens and I now believe that we did so in a healthy environment for animals. We would also cultivate our own vegetables and fruits. I remember the meat having a different taste. The cattle and chickens were not as big as they are here, they didn’t grow as fast, and they surely didn’t reproduce as quickly as they do in farms here.
The author of this work also is very knowledgeable on this topic because it is his area of expertise through much research and studying. While Yount is using questions from undergraduate students, they are easily understood questions. This article adds value to my research paper because it brings the humanity of eating meat into the equation. So as my research essay moves from the human biological need, or lack thereof, to consume meat, this article will help me bridge the gap because of the wide variety of opinions and facts that are presented within it.
Throughout American society, there is a divide between the ideologies of vegetarians and non-vegetarians as it is proven that the average American diet of animal based products has had detrimental effects on the well-being of both humans and animals. Humans can live a maximum of 21 days without food in their stomach, therefore supermarkets provide access for individuals to obtain food without going to the nearest farm. The vast aisles of supermarkets are lined with food ranging from vegetables to meat in order to fit the wants of all individuals in terms of their food decisions. However, Americans should become increasingly aware with their food choices. Certain foods contain large quantities of chemicals, which is problematic, as global

In the year 1900, scientists estimate that the world’s population was about 1.6 billion people. In 2016, researchers for United States Census Bureau approximate that the world’s population is roughly 7.3 billion. In the year 2100, researchers predict that the world will attain an astounding population of 11 billion people. As the population of our world continues to increase exponentially, so does our demand for food. In 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture found that, “[i]n 2012, the average American consumed 71.2 pounds of red meat (beef, veal, pork, and lamb) and 54.1 pounds of poultry (chicken and turkey).” While it is clear that the American diet consists of a high percentage of red meat, the majority of Americans have become desensitized
Although gang violence and the possession of firearms seem more detrimental to our society, the production of our food and how it is being genetically modified effects our well-being. Individuals know the health risk of food and the modification of it; however, the issue that revolves around this situation is that, people do not want to hear about what lies beneath the surface because they do not want to give up their addiction. Power and profit are the reasons why corporations treat living-beings as objects. American medicine revolves around treating people with illnesses, not preventing illnesses. The economic development and production of modern meat are responsible for outbreaks and the contamination of our livestock’s. The consumption of animal flesh is a prime contributor to today’s epidemic of heart disease, obesity and cancer.
This week’s readings were eye opening. I have always known that red meat consumption was high in the U.S. but I under estimated how high. When I moved here 10 years ago I was surprised on how much meat people ate. I went to a friend’s house for dinner and they had barbequed steaks. I got a huge steak on my plate, and I thought it was for everyone to share but I was told that it was mine. This stuck with me since and I always go back to that moment I too became a heavy meat eater. In Rwanda where I am from a rib-eye steak is for a family of 4, not for one person. I grew up consuming not more that 4-6 ounces of meat daily.
Even with clear evidence linking serious health problems to red meats, many Americans getting into a sulky moods because they are unable to give up their bacon and hamburgers even if this could save their lives. According to the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), they found that diets higher in red/processed meats have a greater risk of colorectal cancer and diets with low red/processed meats and higher in fruits, veggies, legumes, ext is extremely beneficial to not only one's health, but the
