Imagine you just finished watching a show on Netflix and at the end you are like “ wow this was a pretty awesome show.” Or the show sucked and you give it two stars. Well, congratulations, you have just participated unconsciously in what we call “media criticism.” Media criticism is when you, the viewer, engage into and critique every aspect of the show; from the lighting, to the music, to the clothing of the characters, down to the character development. Before taking this class, I just watched television to receive enjoyment not because I wanted to analyze the narrative complexity of George Lopez, or the visual style of How To Get Away With Murder. In media criticism, we are focused on the critical and qualitative methods of how media achieves to provide meaning to its audience(Delbert,2017). As different individuals, we watch television in different ways and what we gather from what we watch are different as well. What Leah thinks is a great representation of a piece of work, might be different from what I think. Whether we like a show or not is not the ultimate goal of media criticism. We are trying to analyze the reasoning behind different props, why the lighting is one way, one angle and the other angle the lighting is different, or more to the point why the producer chose to present his or her work a certain way.
