Social media has become an essential part of life for many teens and young adults. With social media only getting bigger, it has grown to the point where it is effecting democracy. People have come to rely on social media as their source of news, which can be very one sided. If social media is the only source of news, it would dictate who the president would be every election. Twitter could have blocked Pro Trump tweets and only shown bad or misleading things if they wanted to. Some other things that could threaten 21st century American democracy are fake news articles, Trump’s tweets, and misleading “click bait” headlines. Fake news stories have been a very common theme on social media and other forms of public information. The presidential election of 2016, sparked the fake news stories about many different things but most were coming down on Hilary Clinton. Many of the stories on Clinton are about her failing health (Putin’s 2nd Video). A few of the news stories recited that “The real Hillary Clinton has been dead since 1998 and was replaced with a clone” or “Throughout the campaign, cameras have caught glimpses of Hillary Clinton coughing, wheezing, stumbling, and stuttering... The document said Clinton reports "blacking out, uncontrollable twitching, and memory loss” (Snopes and Drudge). Many of these articles were started by the Russians to somehow get back at Hillary. There is also some truth behind those stories. A reliable source says “Hillary has suffered at
Suicide rates have increased in teens over the past few years. Along with suicide rates increasing, mental health of teens in general has been a widely discussed topic. A huge contributor to these issues is social media. Over the past couple of years, teens have been diagnosed with mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression at a much higher rate. These issues are prevalent for teens all over the world. The increase in diagnosis of disorders is largely due to the rise in popularity of many social media platforms.
Ever since the 2016 presidential election, many people are turning their attention on the influence of social media and it’s overall impact on democracy. Personally, I think social media is playing a huge role in the changes of democracy; and social media is also responsible for the challenges democracy is currently facing. Social media is influencing the slump of democracy because of fake news, contradictory views being expressed online, and automated accounts also known as “bots.”

Though social media could be used as a useful tool to communicate with friends, family and even with people you do not know, however, researchers show that social media is absolutely harming human's skills to have

Whether it is about Kylie Jenner's pregnancy or about the issue of kneeling during the National Anthem, most people have some type of news pop up on their social media accounts. Social media affects how we get our news by who we follow, whether the information we receive is credible or not, the opinions you, and others, have, and because the younger children are now able to view the news in their own way. Most people are able to “follow” accounts that are dedicated to reporting the news and some get it from people who talk about it or post about it . However, reliable information is hard to find because of how some accounts or organizations twist or alter the truth or show images or videos that compromise the truth, but platforms like Snapchat, make it easier. Since most juveniles have social media, they are automatically exposed to current events and the news. Opinions matter, and thats why most social media platforms are a great way to view or express them.
Medium theory is concerned with the prevalent role that technology plays in a constantly changing society, shaping patterns of both culture and communication. Research conducted by the authors, compared how newspapers and blogs differ in terms of the characterization of social media, the framing of the Steubenville rape case, and the characterization of the perpetrators and the victim. The sample included newspaper articles and blog entries released December 2012 to June 2013, the period that corresponded with the nonjury trial of the accused rapists and the aftermath of the sentencing. Altogether, the sample included 44 newspaper articles and 34 blogs. The findings demonstrated there was no significant difference in how the two platforms characterized social media regarding the coverage of the case. Concerning the framing of the case, newspaper articles were 50/50 in their description of football players as American athletes with a positive or negative connotation. Personal blog entries were heavily leaning toward the negative connotation. In addition, blog entries also discussed victim blaming/slut-shaming as a societal concern and were more likely to mention rape cover-up by coaches, officials, friends of the suspect, etc. than newspaper articles.
In today’s society, technology and social media allow widespread dissemination of information at a much faster pace than conventional media. A prevalent issue regarding technology is its effect on the extent of the influence of political events. The media has been vital in bringing awareness to political events, but it has also contributed to the spread of misleading information. In a society where the media has such an effect, it is essential to question whether or not social media should be regulated in order to avoid the spread of misinformation in society.
The media is a very multi-diverse business with a huge amount of competition, which is why any attention to the media is important. The most ridiculous idea may attract the larger audience. Bad media can also be good media as it can captivate the attention of many viewers. Viewers may feel insulted, discriminated, upset, targeted, offended, etc. but it will most likely catch their attention enough for them to become a repetitive audience member. Many stereotypes are often portrayed in modern day characters as they often taken lightly. The African-American character will tend to be a criminal based person who is considered a lower-class outlaw. The people will typically over-value sex and male dominance. The person will also have the preferences of the African-American usually depicted on our social media. This is an only an example of the case of the African-American identity but this theory applies to all races, but mostly our Caucasian, Indians, Asian and Latino characters. As American shows are the most broadcasted in the world, they typically gather the most viewers and the most attention. In order to observe the extreme conditions of the media, three shows were selected for observatory purposes. The shows were the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Family Guy and Wild N Out.

Facebook has always strived on the belief that this social network is where users connect with not just friends but with the expansive world around them. Recently in the last several years, some Facebook users have been expose to a world that they were not prepared or intend to see. Gory visuals of a sinister and graphic nature that document this reality of debauchery has become viral on some user’s news feed. Images and videos of dead bodies, bloody car accidents, mutilations and animal cruelty are a fragment of what users were exposed to during the November 2011 gore-porn-link spam attack (Sarachik 2011). Facebook was able to close the exploit with the help of Facebook’s own technician after being informed of the problem. Still images and videos depicting real-life blood and gore still finds their way on Facebook, where they can potentially be seen by hundreds of millions of users. Shortly after images of the execution of James Foley by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) appeared online on Facebook, a safety advisor for the company calls for the implementation of safety measures that would prevent users from accidentally accessing the images (Kelion 2014). In recent years Facebook have been increasingly used by some users on the social network to post graphic content and obscene pornographic material and the reason for this is because the social network is not effectively regulating and monitoring the content. The reasons for why Facebook needs
