Media In The 1920's

A liberal is a person that believes that the government should provide equality for all, while a conservative is a person that believes in limited government and that the government should provide the necessary freedom for people to pursue their own goals. Over time, it has been argued, mostly by conservatives, that there is a liberal bias in the media. Liberals have combated this idea with the belief that conservative media is devoted to making efforts to invoke fear and division in the general public. Though liberals make a fine counter-argument, it is easier to observe that the media is liberal-biased. The liberal versus conservative debate can be compared to facts versus values. Another reason for bias within the media is that a significant percentage of minorities, or smaller groups within the population that are often thought to be poorer, politically identify themselves as liberals. To make these minorities feel like the government is on their side as well as everyone else’s, the media must accommodate the needs of these minorities. Because of this, the media becomes liberal-biased.

“You ain’t heard nothing yet,” is one of the most popular lines from the first talkie ever produced. That being The Jazz Singer. With this quote, movies were inherently changed forever. Starting from the beginning, in the 1920’s economic prosperity spread like wildfire in America. With that, came more leisure time for the average person and movies, being a cheap source of entertainment, boomed along with the stocks. The hotspot for this movie epidemic was in Hollywood, California. With that being said, movies and Hollywood had a significant impact in the 1920’s and modern times through societal changes and technological advancements.

A ten year gap can really impact a society. This is evident in the times of the 1920s through the 1930s. These decades are very different from one another. This paper compares and contrasts the traits of these times in the world of pop culture. Pop culture is an accurate way to observe the past because it shows everything that was mainstream and a staple of the time.

After the First World War, many people were looking forward to good times. The 1920’s presented people with this time of fast-paced fun and adventure. Entertainment was the foremost part of everyday life during the 1920’s. Radio introduced a whole new practice of entertainment to people’s everyday lives. Likewise, through the utilization of the radio, people were able to experience a new medium to entertain themselves. Furthermore, the radio changed the face of society’s culture through its widespread use. In addition, radios provided people with a new, effective and efficient means of communication. The 1920’s in American was a crazy and exciting time, there was so much social and political change going on. People were beginning to work less but at the same time make higher minimum wage. Since people had more money and more free time it helped created the radio and movie industry in America. Over time the radio became a product of mass market.

The radio in the 1920s was a very big part of lives of Americans. The radio had become sort of like a ´norm´, where almost everyone had one. According to American Radioworks, more than 40% of American household owned radios, and then later in doubled to 80% a decade later. Americans soon depended on the radio for everything. The radio typically coated Americans $150 according to 1913-1928: WW1 & Prohibition.To finding out what's going on in the US and to just passing free time. Surveys found that listeners in the 1930s spent an average of more than four hours a day listening to radio broadcasts(American Radioworks). This means the radio shaped society on how they spent their time and money, and how the radio took over their lives.

In the late 1950s and into the 1960s responsibility played a large role in how news was distributed. Three television networks, ABC, CBS, and NBC, were among the outlets with formally trained news anchors who brought forth a sense of unity in the country. But, as the years progressed and people began to develop special interests, the ways news was relayed transformed (Turow, 1997, p. 40).

The radio when it was invented by Guglielmo Marconi in 1913 people were unsure of it until it makes a bigger impact in the 1920s it became an American pastime, it majorly helped the rapid growth women getting out of their normal work roles, bringing music sports and politics into the home lives of many Americans, and the brining of many new radio stations.

The endless amount of wealth lead to the excess amount of everything in sight. The introduction of mass entertainment was very revolutionary during this time. The young generation drifted from the traditional ways and began to do what was believed to be taboo by their elders. The cities were now run by the youngsters and their money. Another area which was greatly important during this era was the endless amount of alcohol which was being distributed at parties even though it was illegal at this time. Every party during this era had some type of alcohol and the cuisine during this era was also very extravagant and unique because there was no worry about the cost. Pop culture includes Flappers, jazz music, and marathon dancers. The 1920’s was considered the aftermath for the world war 1 because many found comfort knowing that the war was done and it was time to celebrate.

The early 1900’s brought change to race, gender, and socioeconomic status through culture, industry, and more. Whether it be the new, lively art during the Harlem renaissance or unfair, racist Japanese internment camps, America saw change that brought both negative and positive impact to the lives of citizens. Initially, the 1920’s was an amazing time to be alive for everyone. However, this was not the case for farmers. Economy in the South declined so much that people left and selling crops was a nearly impossible task. Additionally, the Great Depression would become an obstacle for so many Americans. Ultimately, FDR’s new deal brought communities closer in a time of suffering.

Radio broadcast started in the 1920’s though not many people heard it,the public however could hear it well and was filled with radio’s. Many families would gather around the radios at night for their own entertainment. The first radio used and bought was the crystal radio to make these very simple radios you needed a piece of lead galena, crystal, and a cat whisker these radios were not very productive because people could make them at home if they wanted to. By 1922, 600 radio stations popped up in the United States. The very first radio station in Chicago in 1921 by Westinghouse Electric and a manufacturing company was KYW. It played apra music 6 days a week and became a favorite in Chicago. After apra singing started getting old they

broadcasting became attainable. The first broadcasting station in the world emerged in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1920. The Hollywood neighborhood of Los Angeles in the state of California was the location of the growing American movie industry. Watching films became one of the ways of spending leisure time among American citizens. Film stars such as Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and Mary Pickford emerged as icons to many people around the world.

As the years progressed, the people craved for a new sort of entertainment to amuse themselves. Within these two decades, numerous kinds of media either arose or improved drastically over the years. It was the changes in the media and how it was used to makes the 1920’s and 1930’s prominent from any other time period. Without a doubt, it is safe to say the radio dominated the 1920’s. The device was not only a source or entertainment, but also a source of communication that can broadcast throughout the country at any given time.
