Media’s Role on Self-Image “Appearance is more important in our society than ever,” said Dr. Thompson in the New York Times. Undoubtedly, self-image has become an important trait for people to have. Unfortunately, some people go to extremes to get the so called “perfect body” to attempt to look like the models shown in the media. “Researchers have believed that the media may play a central role in creating the phenomenon of body dissatisfaction and consequently, may be partly responsible for the increase in eating disorders” (Paediatr Child Health). In fact, girls who are average weight, believe they are overweight or actively trying to lose weight. Henceforth, young females believe that even if they are thin or even underweight, they are still unsatisfied with their body. This same article reported prevalence rate for anorexia nervosa is 0.48% among girls 15 to 19 years old. In addition, in one study, “44% of girls believed they were overweight and 60% were actively trying to lose weight even though the majority of these young girls were within normal weight ranges” (Paediatr Child Health). Shelly Grabe, evaluates the testing by linking media exposure to women's body dissatisfaction, of the thin ideal, and eating behaviors; which indeed, support the notion that exposure to media images depicting thin-ideal body relates to body image concerns for women, according to the Article in EBSCO Psychological Bulletin (par …show more content…

Due to having low self-esteem, depression could easily be led next; which ties back into eating disorders. Granted that, the media holds much of the responsibility, as a result of their portrayal on body image; getting rid of media is unethical. For this reason, using thin, beautiful models to advertise products is what makes a profitable business. Paediatr Child Health makes a claim that the media cannot be disregard do to the fact that it is an important tool for health promotion and prevention strategies (par17 ). Although this may be true, low self-esteem can be controlled in terms in mind over matter. For the most part, only one’s self can control how they may feel towards their appearance; as a consequence, this can be argued that people can choose not to let the media’s fantasy world effect how they fell on their body
