Media Violence: A Negative Influence on Young People A massive amount of violence is being displayed in the media and has become harder to avoid. Violence is everywhere. We experience it in various ways, such as rap music, television, or first person shooter video games. We hear rap music and remember the vicious lyrics. We constantly watch celebrities commit crime on television and observe people being slaughtered multiple times a day. Youth can virtually do the slaughtering of the other characters while playing first person shooter video games. These forms violence in our media is overwhelming. The lyrics talk about sex, drugs, and violence and are embedded into the innocent minds of youth because they are catchy, therefore, easier to remember. Nia Doaks points out, “it can tap into people’s emotions and change the way that they act” (par. 1). If a person hears violent lyrics consistently, it will be more likely to affect to person’s mindset. Famous rappers rapping about doing negative things could also be misinterpreted as a way to fame and fortune. An article written by Abkoobthoj, a contributor of Teen Ink, says the lyrics from “Brave in the Heart” are informing youth that the only way to be victorious and live, violence must be used (par. 1). Listening to rap music can be destructive for the teen mind. A hip hop purist surveyed the incarcerated youth and found that an “overwhelming majority of incarcerated youth say they listen to ‘gangsta shit’ to pump them up to get high or commit crime” (bullet 14). The incarcerated youth also referred to less negative rap as “’weak’ or ‘corny’” (bullet 15). After spending a few sessions with the hip hop purist, most of the incarcerated youth “are mad at the mainstream music industry once they’re exposed to alternatives and conclude that the industry is intentionally promoting music to ‘brainwash’ them” (bullet 24). If the youth are exposed to other rappers instead of only the commercial rappers, they become aware that the music they listen to does have an effect. Television is another contributing factor
