Should Media Portray Only Positive Images of Health Care Name Institution Should Media Portray Only Positive Images of Health Care Media has portrayed many negative images of healthcare through television including movies. It is important that media presents positive images of healthcare to influence positive public perceptions on healthcare delivery. Health care television shows have portrayed nurses as handmaidens to doctors, ‘naughty’, battle-axes’, sex objects, self-sacrificial angels and unintelligent (Stanley, 2008) and have influenced the public to believe that the role of healthcare professionals particularly nurses are invaluable. Healthcare organizations have a role to inform the public about the value of the healthcare system and healthcare professionals in society. The purpose of this paper is to show that the media should only show positive images of healthcare. One of the main reasons why the media should only show positive images of healthcare is that portraying negative images undermines the healthcare profession. In the healthcare organization, nurses are the largest group of professionals that provide direct patient care in hospitals (Hassmiller & Cozine, 2006). However in media, many television healthcare shows and movies have shown negative images that do not accurately represent the healthcare profession.
