Medical Career Research Paper

My choice of internal medicine as a career is based on my experiences through medical school. Internal medicine allows me to manage patient issues, give treatments, and work with other health care professionals to treat patients. Internal medicine is a sophisticated career that I would like to be a part of.

I have aspired to be in the medical field for as long as I can remember. At the beginning of every school year the teachers would inquire each student to share what role we wanted to pursue when we grow up, my answer was always the same: a nurse. I am very goal oriented, and I am aware to accomplish anything you must work for it and put in one hundred percent. Mistakes can be critical, but they remain a huge part of the learning experience and advancing. How one handles those mistakes are ultimately what makes or breaks you.

The medical field is a career path that brings about many options and opportunities of great value. The noble idea of being a doctor tends to cloud the diligent studying and precise training that is actually required for this career. I have wanted to become a doctor since a very young age, and now that the opportunity is here for the taking, I have fully researched what it takes to succeed in this profession and various specialties of the practice. There are hundreds of career paths and options, which can be overwhelming and exciting. I have looked into many possibilities and wanted to talk to a speech pathologist about their career and responsibilities. Speech pathologists, also known as speech-language pathologists or speech therapists, help individuals with a multitude of disorders, associated with swallowing, speech, and language. They can work in schools, hospitals, specialty clinics, or through private practice. I chose to interview Sherri Anderson, a speech pathologist for Rock Creek Elementary School in the Beaverton School District in Oregon. For my Health Science 1 class we were instructed to choose 3 different careers. The careers to be chosen were a health care career, a career of disinterest, and a career we would like to pursue. I aspire to be a Cardiovascular Perfusionist because it would feel great to be able to prevent someone from dying pre- maturely. I dislike the real estate field because they don't make much money and they do entirely too much work for not much profit. The career path I have chosen to take is in the medical field. My dream from a young age was always to be a nurse. Like many of my peers I want to lead by example and live a successful life I can talk about, something full of adventure. I always had an interest in science and the medical field since I was a child. At a young age I wanted to help people, impact and change the world for the better. The medical field is continuously growing like the people of America, there are unlimited possibilities and opportunities to improve healthcare and medical practices. Most of the courses I am in now and plan on taking in the future are all aiming towards a career in the medical field specifically an M.D in Anesthesiology.

I have been working on my academic career for many years now. I am currently in my third year of community college, and have come across multiple teachers who have helped and inspired me in many ways. A teacher not only teaches the content of their course, but life skills as well. They are kind, caring, considerate, and understanding of their students. A teacher who goes above and beyond for their students is one that will make a difference. One teacher who I believe has made all the difference to me, was my accounting professor.

Originally when I thought I liked medicine the only term I knew was “doctor”, so for a while, that's what I wanted to become. However through exploration, I found that there were many different types of medicine, and by examining what I enjoy I'm now interested in working in pediatrics or geriatrics. If I’m accepted into this program, I hope to grow in my basic knowledge as well as explore many different potential pathways to help further decide what to pursue. When I think of my career goals, I ask myself what I want to accomplish in life. I know that I love helping patients and families, and I want to continue to do that. I always am changing my mind on what I want to do after my BSN. I don’t know when or if I will get my masters or continue to work at the bedside for a while.
