Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Are Not Beneficial Medical marijuana has been a debatable subject of whether it is safe or harmful to people with serious conditions, such as cancer. To add on to the debate, medical marijuana clinics, or “dispensaries” have been placed in several communities around the United States, causing uproar between the supporters and the non supporters of medical marijuana. Some argue that dispensaries help their community and the economy, while others believe that they will cause trouble in their towns. Although some people strongly believe that putting medical marijuana dispensaries in their cities will be beneficial to the community, medical marijuana clinics are unsafe and not helpful to the communities where they …show more content…
The process to receive treatment is simple: a person goes to a physician complaining about chronic pain they are having, that doctor quickly examines them, and then they can walk out the door with a “green card,” which is the prescription from the doctor saying it is okay for them to receive dosages of medical marijuana. Green cards are passed out so often, that, in 2009, two thousand, eight hundred green cards were passed out in a matter of two months (Kavula 24)! This statistic proves how quick and easy it is for people to get those green cards. No medical records are required- only paperwork, an examination, and twenty five dollars to purchase a card. “If you are simply alive, there is a good chance you have a symptom that warrants a medical marijuana card” (qtd. in Gibson). It is amazing how people can just walk in to a doctor’s office and complain about little pains so they can easily get a hold on medical marijuana. To prevent these types of people from getting medical marijuana, things need to …show more content…
Some areas have seen an increase of crimes in their community, and medical marijuana clinics are part of the reason for the rise of crime. Assaults, gang infiltration, and violence have become an everyday thing for cities with dispensaries. Fights, murders, theft, bombings, and graffiti are all linked to medical marijuana dispensaries found in California, Colorado, Montana, and several other big cities with multiple dispensaries (Croke). It is crazy! “It’s an absolute nightmare; my prediction is that it’s only going to get worse if we continue to allow it” (qtd. in Croke). Clinics should not be causing all this trouble in the communities. If they are there to help citizens of the community, it is certainly not working because of all this insanity caused by them. Something needs to be done about
In recorded medical history, there has never been a death as a result of marijuana use or overdose. While medical professionals agree on the benefits of marijuana use for many serious conditions, the FDA will not step over federal law and begin testing the medical properties of marijuana. This leads all medical marijuana growers and dispensaries in a precarious position. While states’ law allows licensed individuals to grow and distribute to patients with prescriptions, they are still technically breaking federal drug and narcotics laws, and can be subject to arrest, seizure of products and equipment, and fines. They can also be charged with violating federal drug and narcotics laws that could land them in jail and, if convicted, leave a mark on their permanent legal records. Yet even with so much risk involved in the business, there are 984 registered dispensaries currently operating in the United States. So one might ask, why do they risk everything to violate federal law and sell illegal drugs? The most popular opinion is that the federal government is wrong in outlawing the use and distribution of marijuana for medical use and that the risk is worth the reward if sick people receive the only treatment that can help them in their time of greatest need. Mill’s harm principle states that the government should only interfere in
The use of medical marijuana (slang: Acapulco gold, ace, bhang, cannabis, hash, dope, ganja, grass, weed, hashish oil, hemp, home-grown, honey oil, indica, Jamaican roach, sativa, sinse, sinsemilla, tea, weed oil) has a been a major topic of debate for countless years. People all around the United States have seen propaganda of some sort regarding the legalization of marijuana. For example, with the ongoing discussion of legalization throughout the states, it’s abruptly mentioned in the news, everyday conversations, school topics for debate, and within stories of social media. In the article, “Is marijuana prohibition coming to an end”, Michelle Johnson a North Carolina journalist, states “Legalizing marijuana for a medical or recreational
Medical marijuana has been one of the most controversial topics in politics for years regardings its legalization and any possible benefits. Marijuana is commonly referred to as the “gateway drug” and has been thought to be what causes the downfall of our youth in today’s society. This has caused Marijuana to earn a bad reputation due to the immense surrounding propaganda and bias opinions. Cannabis is the scientific name of the plant which is absolutely natural and free of chemicals, but the psychoactive components in the plant has been proven to be of medical use. If medical marijuana is prescribed correctly it has the potential to help thousands of patients due to the variety of benefits it can medically provide. Medical Marijuana should
A controversial topic often being advocated for by sitting governors is whether the legalization of marijuana is more beneficial or harmful to the economy. Marijuana, also known as weed, is a mixture of the dried and shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the cannabis sativa plant. It’s the most widely used illegal drug in the United States, even though studies have shown results that the benefits of using marijuana for medicinal or recreational reasons far outweigh the negative matters that may be associated with its use. While marijuana is still a controlled substance under federal law, thirteen U.S. states currently have compassionate use laws in place, which allow for regulated medical marijuana use. By legalizing marijuana, the government is helping the economy by reaping medical and financial benefits, not only at the state level, but also at the federal level. Taking into account the numerous studies done with marijuana on whether it is for recreational use or medical purposes, the government cannot go wrong in legalizing marijuana because of such an impact it will have. Marijuana should be legalized for recreational purposes because it will help society economically and socially.
Ever since marijuana’s introduction to the United States of America in 1611, controversy of the use and legalization of the claimed-to-be Schedule I drug spread around the nation. While few selective states currently allow marijuana’s production and distribution, the remaining states still skepticize the harmlessness and usefulness of this particular drug; therefore, it remains illegal in the majority of the nation. The government officials and citizens of the opposing states believe the drug creates a threat to citizens due to its “overly-harmful” effects mentally and physically and offers no alternate purposes but creating troublesome addicts hazardous to society; however, they are rather misinformed about marijuana’s abilities. While
Legalizing marijuana is crucial to the medical field because many patients cannot use this marvelous plant to relieve their pain. This plant can help patients with multiple sclerosis, nausea from cancer chemotherapy, HIV, nerve pain, and seizure disorders. Many patients must go behind the doctors back and consume cannabis or give it to a loved one to relieve their pain. Only twenty-nine states have allowed the use of medical marijuana. Furthermore, that means that twenty-two states do not allow the usage of any form of Cannabis. Marijuana should be an all-around legal
How do medical marijuana dispensaries impact the communities around them? Is the result positive or negative? Do they harm or heal? Medical marijuana dispensaries have become more common in today’s world, leaving controversy in their wake. Even though some people believe medical marijuana clinics attract crime, they actually help the communities around them by boosting the economy and benefitting those with medical need.
One of the primary focuses of America 's War on Drugs is the controversial drug Marijuana. Marijuana remains the most widely used illegal drug and stirs up constant debate everywhere. With the pain of the world stopping people from enjoying simple pleasures, sometimes there is a need for help. Marijuana brings millions of people relief from pain flet on a day-to-day basis. This completely natural plant which previously helped so many people has puzzled the leaders of our nation for a long time. The effects of the drug on a individual level is what 's prevented the product from being legalized. Many issues involving this plant, like the speculation of it being a gateway drug, has put yet another block on its legalization. Even with the drugs known speculations, the benefit that it brings to the table most definitely out way its disadvantages. Marijuana can also alleviate several symptoms associated with cancer and Aids treatments and disorders. While Marijuana is effective as a medicine, it is also extremely lucrative. The economic benefits that Marijuana brings to the table are endless. Non legalization is a waste of societies hard earned money to continue to enforce
“Marijuana has been shown to alleviate symptoms of a wide range of debilitating medical conditions, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer 's disease, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), epilepsy, Crohn 's disease, and glaucoma, and is often an effective alternative to narcotic painkillers.” (Merino) Medical marijuana helps increase people 's appetite, relieves symptoms of pain and diseases that affect their ability to move, and helps reduce anxiety levels when dealing with certain diseases or more intense treatments. There are also different and safer forms of using medical marijuana other than smoking such as edibles, oils, vaporizing, tinctures, transdermal patches, and beverages. “ Marijuana took away my nausea, so I could eat healthy. It took away the severe restlessness and anxiety, so I could relax. It allowed me to eat, sleep and be up and active when I was awake — all of which are critical to recovery.” (Bokland) Most medical marijuana supporters suffer from a form of cancer or other disease, medical marijuana is a safe treatment that has been proven to help people who suffer from these diseases. A group of physicians named “The Doctors for Cannabis Regulation” are the largest group of doctors that are in favor of medical marijuana legalization, deming that cannabis is far less dangerous and unhealthy for adults than both alcohol and tobacco. Even with all this information, people still refuse to allow the use of medical
Many citizens in the United States suffer from lifelong diseases that cause them to lose the ability to live their day-to-day lives. The United States is now faced with the problem over whether or not drugs, often stigmatized by society, should be made legal. One of these lifesaving drugs is medical marijuana. This leaves us with the troubling question: “should medical marijuana be legalized in the United States?”. Supporters of the drug have argued that it should be legalized because it is superior to other painkillers and can be beneficial to people suffering from numerous illnesses. However, those who oppose its use, argue that not enough research has been done and it may be harmful. The
The topic of legalizing marijuana has been on the fore front of controversial issues ever since marijuana, cannabis, was brought into the United States from Mexico in the early 1920s. Twenty-four states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana use in the past two decades, however, only four of those states, Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, have passed the law legalizing recreational marijuana use. Some states have already enacted laws that allowed for the possession of marijuana to such individuals that received a written prescription from their doctors. Federal law, however, has continued to prohibit doctors from writing patients a marijuana prescription, meaning
Throughout this paper, there will be the highly debatable discussion between legalizing medical marijuana and regular marijuana. Both sides of the argument have their pros and cons and there is an in depth description of both sides of the argument. At the end of the day though, the paper thoroughly supports the legalization of medical marijuana and marijuana in general. Medical marijuana less harmful than most other legal tobacco products and has the ability to reduce the pain within ailing people. Cannabis also can be a curable and more natural drug to help people in pain. Marijuana also has the potential to raise the U.S. out of their tough economic struggle as well as lower crime rate and create more jobs for many more
Not only are dispensaries uprooting assaults and violence in certain areas, they are also causing drug dealings. Everyone knows that the United States has a problem with drug dealings, but these dispensaries are making matters much worse. Clinics are hiding the fact that people are using them for drug dealings. Since it is so easy to get a hold on medical marijuana because clinics are in the community, a dealer can easily sell the cannabis they receive from the dispensaries without getting caught. The little amount of laws placed on medical marijuana dispensaries allows this crime, and it is causing more people to get involved in the drug dealing business. More people in the drug dealing business will lead to more gangs, crime, and affect
Because of how so many of us look at medical marijuana, we make it really hard for families who need access to these medicines. Time and time again, family after family will have to give up everything they have so they can move to a state that allows them access to the medicine their children could not survive without. Veterans who come back broken from the wars are given prescription after prescription that turns them into zombies instead of something, that actually is known to treat anxiety, depression, and PTSD symptoms, all because it comes from a plant some people have a negative opinion
Within today’s society, Cannabis is seen as a harmful substance of such negative controversy. Marijuana is a very prominent and controversial issue in society today. Despite many malicious allegations have been made regarding marijuana today, the truth of what marijuana’s real dangers are are beginning to come about again. Sadly, these facts have been held under considerable judgement because of what people stereotype a pot smoker as. This has been brought under heavy criticism due to the stereotypical view of what people view as the typical “pot smoker.” This image society has of a lazy and unambitious America has all been the result of almost one hundred years of false propaganda and stereotypes gossiped by certain private individuals trying to keep weed illegal for their own personal benefit.
