Marijuana, as a legitimate medication has for some time been a front running issue in the Medical Field here in the United States. With many states legalizing medicinal marijuana, and with even a few having legalized recreational marijuana consumption, the subject has become very popular over the last few years. Marijuana research, in the medicinal sense, has provided us with a flood of information on the benefits of medical applications, but also indicates certain risks that come with consumption. Its first applications were seen in India where “the plant was used medicinally and non-medicinally, most notably at the festival of Durga Puja”.(Kalant, 2001) Marijuana was often used medicinally to induce relaxation for pregnant women, but was later found to have practical use as an anxiolytic, an anticonvulsant, and a sedative. Being that these are certain symptoms of alcohol and opiate abuse, marijuana was a practical treatment for those issues as well. After being introduced in Europe in the 17th century, most notably in France and Great Britain, many more medical applications for marijuana were discovered. The famous French psychiatrist Moreau de Tours was one of the first credible researchers of marijuana for legitimate medical purposes. “He proposed the use of hashish ( a derivative of the marijuana plant) to produce a ‘model psychosis` for scientific study. In Paris, the ‘Club des Haschischins` flourished in the 1750’s, with such members as the poets Baudelaire, Gautier, and Dumas serving as subjects for Moreau’s experiments” (Kalant, 2001) through research by Moreau, along with British physician O`Shaughnessy and many others, a basis for the medicinal applications of marijuana was formed. Mark Anderson, Assistant professor of Economics at Montana State University stated in this following study on Medical Marijuana, “Consistent with the hypothesis that marijuana can be an effective treatment for depression and other mood disorders, there appears to be a sharp decrease in the suicide rate of 15- through 19-year olds males in the treatment states as compared to the control states approximately two years after legalization... Our results suggest that the legalization of medical marijuana is associated with a 5 percent decrease in the total suicide rate, an 11 percent decrease in the suicide rate of 20- through 29-year-old males, and a 9 percent decrease in the suicide rate of 30- through 39 year-old-males.” (D.
