It can stimulate the appetite in patients who are taking chemotherapy for AIDS or cancer.
The chemical compound THC, fits into the brains alfactory bulb, increasing the ability to smell
and taste food more acutely, causing the urge to eat. Chemotherapy caused patients to have a
lack of appetite, by giving them medical marijuana it will increase their appetite and counteract
the negative effects of chemo.
Medical marijuana can also help patients who experience seizures from Parkinson’s
Disease Cerebrial Palsy, and Multiple Scerosis. The chemical THC (tetrahydrocannabinol)
controls seizures by binding itself to the brain cells responsible for controlling exitability and
regulating relaxation.
My belief for medical marijuana is due to
A fifty eight year old female patient was diagnosed with cancer and was due to start chemotherapy in hopes of shrinking the tumour; however, the chemotherapy would make her extremely sick so she was given anti-emetic medication intravenously at the same time as her chemotherapy drugs. Emesis is the act of vomiting, and vomiting is defined as the forceful involuntary emptying of the stomach contents through the mouth and, sometimes, the nose (Ratini M, 2014).
synthetic cannabinoids are now being used in children going through chemotherapy. These drugs help control nausea and vomiting and are also effective in appetite stimulation. The goal of antiemetic medications is to prevent the child from ever experiencing nausea or vomiting. The continued evaluation of the child's nutritional status, intake, and energy expense must happen throughout the treatment. The height weight and head circumference must be measured regularly during visits the hospital or clinic in children less than three years old. A compromised nutritional status can contribute to decreased tolerance to treatment, changed metabolism of chemo drugs, lengthy episodes of neutropenia, and increased risk for infection. Supportive nutrition measures include oral additions with high protein and high calorie foods. High calorie snacks should be easily available for the child. The most distressing side effects of combination drugs is GI mucosal cell damage, which results in open, painful sores anywhere along the alimentary tract. Oral sores in the mouth or pharynx, along the esophagus can also happen in the
The chelating agents given to remove excess copper are given either an hour before meals or two hours after meals. Due to this, patients tend to become nauseous after consuming their medicine. This side effect causes many patients to avoid taking their medicine. This is important because by solving this obstacle, more patients will be more compliant in the treatment of their disease.
Feeding History: Her appetite was improved as indicated by the mother and she gain some weight. V.M. used to refuse eating until she become very hungry, because of the nausea. Dronabinol was very effective in relieving her nausea. She eats mostly two meals with snacks in between on average of 4 snacks. She has one cup of milk daily and her mother constituently remind her to drink water.
The weight of experimental animals increased upto day 14 and was comparable with control animals. From Day 14 to day 35 the weight remained constant in case of DMBA treated cancer induced animals and it slightly increased upto day 42 whereas in untreated animals the weight increased steadily upto day 42 as depicted in Fig 7.1 The constant weight is due to decreased food intake which indicates desired cancer induction.
During her chemotherapy, radiation and eventual double mastectomy, she was told that getting proper nutrients was of the utmost importance. Throughout these two bouts with aggressive breast cancer, my aunt never felt hungry and did not actively enjoy eating because of the strong metallic taste in her mouth, nausea and vomiting due to her chemo, and overall exhaustion. However, Coke persevered. She made every effort to educate herself on the best possible diet and get all the nutrients and exercise she needed.
Taste alteration occurs during chemotherapy, after a few days or after 2 or 3 cycles. Almost patients recover from taste alteration from finishing
The vast majority regularly overlook these side effects yet that is awful what they can do because of that these indications help in diagnosing cancer in the early stage which offers time to specialists and the patient to be prepared well and to act with a drug and suitable eating routine.
Medical marijuana has been used all throughout history in many ways, and some of those uses are still practiced to this day. The earliest record of medical marijuana comes from ancient China. According to their texts in 2737 BC, cannabis was used to treat gout, rheumatism, and constipation (Stack). Another use of cannabis was to treat tumors, which was first practiced by ancient Egyptians. Their texts contain information about marijuana as an ingredient in medicine. Although not much is known about the success of these practices, cannabis continues to receive interest in cancer treatment today. Not only was cannabis used to treat humans, but in ancient Greece they used it to help animals, such as horses, to dress their injuries after battle.
Medical Marijuana, an alternative to a no win situation. Some medical conditions cannot be addressed with current drugs or technology. Including but not limited to seizers, cancers, and pain. These few examples are traditionally treated with drugs that have limited, to no affect, and are very frustrating to patients and physicians mainly because both want some sort of resolution that increases quality of life. The time has come for medical marijuana to be available for those that can benefit from it.
When it comes to the topic of medical marijuana there is a lot of biased opinions on its purpose or benefits/risks to humankind. In addition to whether its uses can cure underlying diseases or if its only use is simply for relief. Furthermore, if marijuana does have so-called healing aspects to it, does that make it a forgiving crime if someone purchases marijuana illegally for pain or treatment purposes? That being said, should medical marijuana be legalized in all states, and how will this affect crimes in those areas where medical marijuana is legal?
Cancer patients frequently experience chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting which affect their nutritional intake, quality of life, activity of daily living and the course of chemotherapy treatment. Whereas most acute chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting are treated with anti-emetics during chemotherapy, anticipatory and delayed chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting can have a detrimental effect on the patients quality of life and increase readmission rate. This paper discusses the different types of chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting, the problem statement and objectives, literature reviews, evidence practice guidelines and interventions for chemotherapy induced nausea and vomiting.
William D. Kelley’s Nutritional-Metabolic Therapy is another alternative for chemotherapy that can help improve one’s survival. Although a little similar to the Gerson Therapy, Kelley’s NMT states that, “An individualized diet was tailored to match the metabolic character of each patient, taking into account his or her physiology , neurological and physical make-up, basic metabolic rate, and personality”(Walters). Kelly created ten different metabolic groups in which would determine the appropriate nutritional program. Like the GT, Kelley’s NMT used diet, supplements, and detoxification to dispose of the disease(s). Many would disagree on the effects of these two similar theories simply because the human mind has been corrupted with all these talks about how modern medicine is the best medicine and that the body cannot heal itself. Chemotherapy is dangerous and should not be injected into the body when there are better approaches to treat
Getting the diagnosis cancer changes the life of patients in an instant. They often seek help and support from alternative healthcare practitioners hoping to combat the debilitating side-effects of chemo and radiation therapy. Many patients wonder if a change in lifestyle, diet or, nutritional supplements can help with the often debilitating side-effects like nausea, vomiting, fatigue, muscle pain, etc.
Cancer complications and treatments are dependent on patient’s health conditions and stage of the cancer. Common complications caused by cancer include pain, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, dyspnea (breathlessness), and metastasis (cancer that spreads) (Mayo Clinic - Complications, 2016). Pain is one of the main physical complications, as the nerves surrounding the tissues feel the pressure due to growing tumor. Pain medications and alternate therapies like massage, yoga, and acupuncture can help patients to cope up with the pain (Mayo Clinic - Complications, 2016). Fatigue can be caused by the side effects of treatments as well and physical and mental distress. Fatigue can be managed through balanced diet and managing stress and medication side effects (Cancer.Net, 2016). Certain tumors and malignancy medications can bring about nausea and vomiting. It causes much inconveniences to the patient. Nausea and vomiting can be controlled by medications. Dyspnea which is a feeling of breathlessness can be caused by tumor or other related conditions, which can be managed by medications and relaxation techniques (Cancer.Net, 2016). Treating these complications by medications and other approaches can improve the patient’s general wellbeing, and survival chance.
