Medical Mentorship Research Paper

The individual interviewed was a medical folk from Promedica Fostoria Community Hospital. They work in the surgery department for sterile processing and have been there for over 16 years. The interviewee was asked multiple questions about the professional group they represent, their code of conduct, and their mission as a facility. They answered the questions to the best of their ability and gave much insight about the facility itself and the staff within the hospital.

Currently, I am in the process of earning my Bachelor’s degree in Biology with a pre-medical emphasis from Grand Canyon University. Upon graduation, I hope to attend either a medical or physician assistant school. My specific goal in the medical field is still up in the air, however, I am avidly exploring the fields of pathology, oncology, emergency medicine, and surgery. If it is an administrative medical assistant they will use the computer, a fax machine, printer, the telephone if they are mainly in the office. I believe that the medical profession is an important and valuable career field and it is very important to the society. I have been fascinated by the workings of life and the complexity of the human body ever since I was young and this has strengthen my philanthropic approach to life, in that I could be trained to help people get better. This, I consider rewarding. I have hoped to develop excellent skills, such as research, communication, teamwork and problem solving. Based on the analysis of the data collected for this research, academic and social assimilation was necessary to keep African American women college students in community colleges. Every mentoring relationship may differ student to student, but overall, mentoring helps students to develop self-confidence, educational goals, and the aspiration to be successful in an educational setting. My passion for medicine is something deeper than a mere interest in learning the extraordinary functions of the human body. I am completely fascinated to learn gross anatomy, histology, pathology, and the complete medical school curriculum. However, I am more captivated by how the knowledge I will gain in medical school will allow me to perform the lifesaving procedures that physicians are able execute. Working as a mentor has helped me become a more sociable person, which has been essential to create a strong relationship with my mentees. The activities such as the personality test, pride line, goal-setting / decision making and reflections on particular topics have assisted me and my mentees to develop social skills, which are not only essential for school, but as well for the workplace. Furthermore, I have been working on to not take things personally because taking things personally have prevented me from building connections and from creating a safety environment for others. As a future teacher, taking things personally will not be beneficial for me and for my future students, therefore, I am working on it and in compare to last semester, I have improved. Also, for most of my life, I have interacted mostly with Latinos and Americans, but working with students from China, Vietnam, Japan, and some from the Middle East, have made me appreciate and become more knowledgeable about their cultures and struggles. My interaction with students from those areas have shaped my methods of coaching and teaching. If I am rehired, I definitely will continue working on becoming more sociable and to not take thing personally.

Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.

Mentorship is very important in the workplace especially in the area of training and development. The mentor-protégé relationship is a much needed relationship that begins in the early career stage and this relationship involves the current or new employees and the supervisor or other colleagues that provide work-related guidance. The relationship itself is comprehensive and involves “educational, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual development” (Greenhaus,, Callanan, & Godshalk, 2010, p 211). One of the initial task of the early career the establishment of the career field which involves the gaining of the workplace competence, learn what is needed to excel in the organization, and to gain acceptance in the workplace to be recognized as the valued employee. There are many ways of achieving the above mentioned advantages in the workplace which one main method is through the use of the mentorship program.

As I enter my junior year in college I can see my career right ahead of me. I am attending Grand Valley State University to become a Physician Assistant. This makes me think about my involvement in people 's health. This also makes me think about the responsibilities I have my patients and their well being. To be prepared for all of the challenges I will need to focus my attention on biomedical ethics. There are morals that have been engrained into my character. These include what is right or wrong and how I will behave in certain situations. I will compare my personal and professional ethics in order to be ready for my healthcare career. My personal ethics are deeply implemented into my professional ethics. This could make conflicts arise between my professional workplace and personal ethical view because of differing perspectives on issues. My personal ethics govern how I behave and help me to navigate through ethical dilemmas. My professional ethics could be restricted however, because of a code of conduct put in place by my employer. A code of conduct states principles expressing responsibility, and defines rules expressing duties of professionals to whom they apply. (Pozgar, 2016) I rely on ethical theories including virtue ethics, utilitarian ethics and principles of ethics to make my judgements.
