Medical Technology Bionics Research Task 1. Discuss the terms non-invasive and minimally invasive in relation to medical techniques. Non-invasive medical techniques can be defined as surgical procedures that do not require the penetration or damage of the skin tissue. Examples of non-invasive medical techniques are imaging techniques such as x-rays and ultrasound. Minimally invasive medical techniques can be defined as surgical procedures that require the smallest incision into the skin. Examples of minimally invasive medical techniques include keyhole surgery and laser eye surgery. 2. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of non-invasive and minimally invasive medical techniques. Non-invasive medical techniques have proven to be advantageous. Imaging techniques are advantageous because they are useful in diagnosing and conditions and diseases in the body, even before symptoms have appeared. For example, x-rays can detect broken bones, kidney stones and tooth decay. Thermography can detect breast cancer 8 years before symptoms have started appearing. Non-invasive medical techniques also take considerable less time to perform on patients than invasive medical techniques. Shorter time in hospital means reduced health-care costs which are another advantage of non-invasive medical techniques. On the other hand, non-invasive medical techniques have a few disadvantages.
