While taking Medical Terminology we had a competency project that included 10 case reports that contained about 5-7 bolded words and 2-3 bolded and underlined abbreviation. Each word had to be broken down by prefix, root and suffix, followed defining each word part to create a definition. For the abbreviation we had to define the meaning of each abbreviation. A word part is when you break down a term into smaller pieces to go a clear meaning and understanding of the word meaning. Word parts also helps you to recognize and remember what each term means, as well as how to pronounce the term. Each term is broken up into three parts that include a prefix, root and suffix. A prefix is attached to the beginning of a term. Not all medical terms contain a prefix, but at the same time the prefix can have an important influence on the meaning. Why medical abbreviations should not be use in the medical field? Abbreviations can be used to save time, space, and have become be available everywhere in prescriptions and medical records. It help save times and space on the paper while writing on document such as prescription or medical record, but it have also causes misinterpreted and involvement in harmful medication errors. Therefore medical abbreviation should not be use when you are trying to communicate with medical information. Giving the wrong prescription to a patients can be harmful and sometimes life threatening.
