At the beginning of their three-day meeting in March 1990, Mr. Roberto Hausman, the president of the Disposable Devices Sector of the Medical Products Company (MPC), welcomed the group assembled around the conference table.
This promises to be a very productive meeting. A window of opportunity has opened up for us, and it appears that we finally have a chance to resolve, once and for all, some of the issues our European organization has been struggling with over at least the last six years. MPC's International Organization
MPC was a major supplier of diagnostics systems and disposable medical devices to health care institutions such as hospitals, physician's offices, clinical laboratories, and pharmacies. In 1990 the combined sales of its two product sectors, Disposable and Diagnostics, were slightly over $2 billion (Exhibit 1 provides a summary of financial information). After a decade of rapid growth,
MPC's sales outside the United States now approached 40% of the total, two-thirds of which took place in Europe.
Professor Robert H. Hayes prepared this case as the basis for class discussion rather than to illustrate either effective or ineffective handling of an administrative situation. Certain names and numbers have been disguised.
