Every movie or a short video is like a novel or essay that either tells a story or tries to make an argument. Like any novel or essay, a video also has its own rhetorical devices in the forms of camera angles and movements as well as lighting and organization. Camera angles and movements are quite useful to direct or inform audience to and about events in the video. For example, from the beginning to the 30-second mark we used an establishing shot to provide the location and to establish the main cast of the video. Then from the 55-second mark to the minute and five-second mark, a zoom is used to direct the audience toward what Joey is researching. Zoom is a good technique to easily guide the audience and ensure they are focused on the video,
The authors tell the reader that a picture must be interpreted like an essay or piece of writing. The motive and goal of the author or photographer must be figured out.
A Modest Proposal ,by Jonathan Swift, is a rather strange piece of work that encompases a proposal of eating babies. Swift did not intend to for people to actually follow his proposal and eat babies, but to showcase the abuse Irish Catholic’s encounter from Protestants in society. Swift oddly uses the proposal of eating Irish babies in his work to showcase how the Irish Catholics are treated. A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift is an obsolete work filled with modern day humour and irony in various ways to compose an essence of satire.
Multiple individual, eye level close up shots create visual sensations that allow the viewer to move with the actors and facilitates sense of emotional connection. The use of high and wide angle shots give scale to the truly massive effort of the invasion of Normandy and enumerable vessels from the relatively small armored landing craft to enormous battle ships are shown in the final shot of the opening battle. These high sweeping shots will be used multiple time throughout the film and serve as reminders of the enormous hurdles that must be overcome and contrast with the use of over the shoulder shots that are used as the Soldiers navigate the French country side in search of Private
For this essay the works of Robert Draper, author of “Why Photos Matter,” and Fred Ritchen, author of “Photography Changes the Way News is Reported,” will be analyzed. Though both deal with the topic of photography, their take on the matter is very different. While Ritchen is a photographer who writes on “what professional photographers will be doing in the future,” Draper is a writer for the National Geographic writing on how the photographers of the magazine share “a hunger for the unknown.” Both writers, however, write on the topic of photographers having a deeper understanding of their subjects, Ritchen due to research and practice, and Draper because the photographers “sit [with] their subjects, just listening to them.” In both essays the need for a deeper understanding of the
close-ups and long shots to give the audience more of a perspective on life. It
Using a medium shot it portrays the part of the scene in more detail. In this scene, it shows of how you would see a person having a casual conversation.
This case raises many interesting questions concerning the record setting issuance of corporate debt by WorldCom, Inc. (“WorldCom”). Both the surprisingly voluminous structure of the proposed issuance and the foreboding macro-economic climate in which it was slated spark concerns over the risk and cost of the move. One of the first questions that must be addressed is whether WorldCom’s timing was appropriate. Next, the company’s choice of structure for the bond issuance must be analyzed. Finally, the cost of issuing each tranche of debt must be estimated in order to determine how much WorldCom is actually giving up to achieve the $6 billion in funds.
Another significant reason that has played a vital role in photojournalism of recent times is the emergence of imaging technologies. Imaging technologies has undoubtedly played a major part in the works of a photojournalist today. Based on earlier accounts on how photography itself is an inherent manipulation, the question is no longer directed on how has imaging technologies manipulate photojournalism' but how much more has imaging
After a steady progression, pictorial photography as a movement emerged. Pictorial photographers believed that their field is more than just an objective, mechanical media. Photography was not just about capturing the documentation and information contained by an image, but rather, about the effect and the mood they translate. The images began to have meaning and a reason for their capture, completely transforming the images produced.
While watching Man With A Movie Camera, I was fascinated by the amount of extreme close ups used by Vertov. Considering the year the film was made and the films I have seen from the 1920’s, the extreme close up was not used very often as a technique from what I remember. I noticed Vertov would sometimes start in a wider establishing shot, then either use a double exposure or a cut into an extreme close up that created a variety of emotions as I viewed it. Sometimes I felt as though, the extreme close ups were used to convey a feeling of intimacy or affection. On the other hand, some of the extreme close ups were quite disturbing and created a feeling of uneasiness as when Vertov shows a woman dealing with what looks like a fever with a washcloth
The low angle shot of Jules holding the gun towards Brett gives the viewers an idea on how he is feeling. When the camera up close to Jules Winnfield face I feel those are eye level shots because we as the viewers would be looking right at him. Then there is the shot towards the end of the scene where Jules and Vega fire their guns killing Brett, those are also examples of low angle shots, even though we don’t see Brett anymore we as viewer have a feeling on what is going to happen
With the development of the camera came new concepts, opportunities, jobs, and ultimately, enlightenment. But who was enlightened? The inventors were enlightened every time they created a new process or invented a new camera, photographers were enlightened every time they developed a new style or concept, and then the public. The public was enlightened because photojournalism created a gateway for them to be connected to events happening elsewhere, whether it be a war zone, national news and local events. Photojournalism connects people in a way that writing cannot do. At first it creates a visual connection, and from seeing images of people in pain, happy people, animals, etc., a connection is made. Images can have such monumental effects
Representation and the critique of ideology apply to photojournalism because a photo does not exist in isolation. This means that a photo always has more meaning than what is shown. A camera only captures what is in front of the lens, not around or behind it, therefore there is always more to the story than one image can portray. A photo also has different
What is a photograph? The simplicity of taking a photograph leads many to ponder its artistic value. Yet, it is undeniable that there are some photos that cause an emotional reaction deeper than simply observing a recorded point in time. Surely, there are photographs that cause more reaction than some modern art pieces. There seems to be two types of photographs. The first classification is the ‘time capture’ photo – an image with the sole purpose of recording a particular event or point in time. The second nature of a photo carries a ‘deeper meaning,’ which has the ability to change the observer’s mood and cause a reaction. But what distinguishes these two varieties? There are a
