I am Brooklyn Bowie, a Health and Safety student at Sheridan High School. After learning about drinking and driving, I want to propose that the BAC be lowered from 0.08 to 0.06 for the safety of everyone on and off the road because even people with a BAC of 0.02 can have affected driving ability which can increase the likelihood of drivers being involved in fatal crashes and it is proven that with a BAC between 0.06 and 0.06, you are three times more likely to be involved in a crash.
On October 31, 2003 Bethany Hamilton, a thirteen- year old girl from Hawaii, was in an accident that would change her life forever. That sunny Halloween morning, after three consecutive days of rain, Bethany, a competitive surfer, was itching to get back into the water. Along the way to Pauaeaka Beach in Kauai, Bethany convinced her mother to stop and check out the waves at Tunnel Beach. While the waves were not so impressive, Bethany decided to stay and surf when her best friend and surf buddy, Alana Blanchard, pulled up with her family. Bethany was excited to be in the water and hoped to catch a fast wave when she saw a shadow beneath her. Before she realized what was happening, a shark bit her arm and the front of her board. Rather than
Also, this shows how Bethany has courage by taking on the sea as she rides the waves to Nationals. Afterwards, practicing everyday with small waves and progressing Bethany has regained hope. Every time Bethany steps into the water she is reminded of the past, but she overcomes it and restores hope as she takes on the competitions and starts to acheive her dreams by doing what she
In People of the Whale by Linda Hogan, the narrative follows the A’atsika community, mainly the characters Ruth, Thomas, and their family and friends. Through magical realism and the characters' interactions, Hogan emphasizes the tensions between tradition and modernization within the A’atsika community. Within Ruth and Thomas we see the inner conflicts as a result of the modernizing community and world and therefore, conflict between each other. The disagreements surrounding the whaling events and the Vietnam War also show the tension of tradition throughout the novel and how magical realism plays a role in that. Authors like François Gavillon and Pirjo Ahokas also discuss the impact of the war, whaling, and how magical realism plays into
In a school, far away in Spain, lived a girl. She was brave, ignorant, and most of all, persistent. She would do anything, and would not stop, even if it was a joke. Sadly enough, this would lead to a deadly phenomenon in the sea.
Molly, a very beautiful pony from Florida, is moving to Iowa this next year. Her mom’s job wants her to go work on a farm there so Molly gets to move with her.
Did you know that Waves was only rated three stars, out of five? This is no hoax, since over a thousand people voted. Some readers may argue that Waves is very descriptive, and contains several little details, but other readers say that these details slow down the pace of the book, and the story uses long outdated terms and references, doesn’t contain many plot twists, and has a boring ending that makes the reader want to stop reading.
In Leanne Simpson’s short story “it takes an ocean not to break,” (“Islands of Decolonial Love” 2015), the author, through the continuing change of tone, paints a portrait of the depths of trauma that is persistent in indigenous society and one of its central issues, suicide. The “therapy-lady” is portrayed as the “other” when put into contact with Indigenous problems and her words come off as almost foreign to the speaker. She can be seen as an allegorical character that represents “white” ideology, or even our current government as a whole, who tries to help the Indigenous people but ultimately fails, not only due to lack of caring but in reality a lack of understanding.
In chapter fifteen of Rock Music Styles: A History, author Katherine Charlton discusses the musical style of new wave. There are many new way groups in the world, but Charlton only selected some of the most notable groups. Charlton divided these notable groups by American and British nationalities. In order to give equal attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans.
In "Ocean’s Eleven" Steven Soderbergh did a great job as a director in keeping the audience interested throughout the whole movie time. Path-goal theory of leader effectiveness can be easily applied to the movie. The path-goal theory by Robert House holds that the leader can affect group’s performance, satisfaction and motivation by offering rewards for achieving goals, clarifying paths towards these goals and removing obstacles to performance.
Have you ever been hurt by words or inspired by a saying? It’s staggering that they can change people's life for good or end it altogether. The Wave, a short novel based on a true story by Morton Rhue, demonstrates the power of words in good and bad ways. The novel is about a teacher who dictates his students into a Nazi-like student group as a lesson for his history class. However, the simple, seemingly harmless experiment soon goes out of hand and no one can stop the students organization, The Wave. An important idea in the text is ‘words can be used for harm or for good. One author method that is used by Rhue to convey this idea is the power of repetition of harmful words. And a second author method that is used by Rhue to reveal this idea is persuasive, emotive language by Mr Ross to get students on board with the experiment.
“To question thoroughly. Never to put your faith in anyone’s hands blindly.” Otherwize you are a mindless soldier with the soul purpose of following orders. But how can you just do this, at free will and not even know it’s wrong. If you are a follower then you should know what your following and how you are affecting others. Now if you are a leader you have to know what power you have and how your followers are using their power over the community.
In the book Star of the Sea, written by author Joseph O’Connor, he states “They had far more in common than either realised. One was born Catholic, the other Protestant. One was born Irish, the other British. But neither was the greatest difference between them. One was born rich and the other poor.” O’Connor summarises the idea of social class that has been a recurring idea since the dawn of time. Social classes is basically the division of society that is based on social and economic status. The people who were at the top of the social classes were thought to be the prestigious and most worthy people and the further you go down the chain the more common people you began to see. Many people demonstrate the social class system in literature. Shakespeare, especially, offers a challenge to what everyone thought they knew of the social class system.
Great waves toss and turn with great force. Rushing as they collide with the earth soaking the soft sand. The ocean seemed to be howling as every wave grew as tall as a mountain. Slowly, the water creeps forward, then lazily seeping back in the vast ocean, only to do the same over and over again. The deep sea is a mysterious place where sea creatures lurk beneath the waves. Blue, sparkling water is everywhere you look with no end. The humming waves seem to whisper as if telling me the most confidential secret. You can never really hear them clearly until you dive in deeper and deeper.
The sound of the emerald green ocean water crashing against the shores filled my ears. Children ran along the shore, smiling from ear to ear while laughing amongst each other clearly enjoying their day. Some people were searching contently for sea shells, that were visible for miles. I looked out at the ocean, it stretched out far into the horizon; as far as my eyes could see. There were jetty’s that were perfectly placed within the ocean. I could smell the salt radiating off of the water. I had been waiting for this moment for a long time; I dashed into the ocean I’d been waiting for for the past
