Intro: Have you ever been hurt by words or inspired by a saying? It’s staggering that they can change people's life for good or end it altogether. The Wave, a short novel based on a true story by Morton Rhue, demonstrates the power of words in good and bad ways. The novel is about a teacher who dictates his students into a Nazi-like student group as a lesson for his history class. However, the simple, seemingly harmless experiment soon goes out of hand and no one can stop the students organization, The Wave. An important idea in the text is ‘words can be used for harm or for good. One author method that is used by Rhue to convey this idea is the power of repetition of harmful words. And a second author method that is used by Rhue to reveal this idea is persuasive, emotive language by Mr Ross to get students on board with the experiment.
In Leanne Simpson’s short story “it takes an ocean not to break,” (“Islands of Decolonial Love” 2015), the author, through the continuing change of tone, paints a portrait of the depths of trauma that is persistent in indigenous society and one of its central issues, suicide. The “therapy-lady” is portrayed
On October 31, 2003 Bethany Hamilton, a thirteen- year old girl from Hawaii, was in an accident that would change her life forever. That sunny Halloween morning, after three consecutive days of rain, Bethany, a competitive surfer, was itching to get back into the water. Along the way to Pauaeaka Beach in Kauai, Bethany convinced her mother to stop and check out the waves at Tunnel Beach. While the waves were not so impressive, Bethany decided to stay and surf when her best friend and surf buddy, Alana Blanchard, pulled up with her family. Bethany was excited to be in the water and hoped to catch a fast wave when she saw a shadow beneath her. Before she realized what was happening, a shark bit her arm and the front of her board. Rather than
I am known to be extremely clumsy. With that, it’s expected that I often end up in awkward situations. In the past I have called numerous teachers “Mom,” fallen down while walking up stairs, almost fallen off a cliff; and it can be assured there were many more instances where my embarrassing clumsiness had led me into awkward, sometimes life threatening, situations. One moment that stands out in particular takes place in every marine animal welfare activists’ “favorite” place, Sea World.
- Franki the Whale - As predicted the stadium was packed full, leaving a handful of places to sit up front near the band and cheerleaders. She gave Capri that look, the rightful glance that screamed ' I told you so.' She would have been more mad, but she happened to like the marching band for the most part, so sitting by them was not as terrible as it is for most. Plus, Alix Hale just asked her out on a date, how could she let herself be brought down. Not to mention the greasy intoxicating smell of something fried and fattening beckoning her to spread all her money on one morsel of food to shove down her throat.
“To question thoroughly. Never to put your faith in anyone’s hands blindly.” Otherwize you are a mindless soldier with the soul purpose of following orders. But how can you just do this, at free will and not even know it’s wrong. If you are a follower then you should know
Did you know that Waves was only rated three stars, out of five? This is no hoax, since over a thousand people voted. Some readers may argue that Waves is very descriptive, and contains several little details, but other readers say that these details slow down the pace of the
Rebecca McKenney History and Sociology of Rock Music Mrs. Trimble 22 October 2016 Meet the New Waves In chapter fifteen of Rock Music Styles: A History, author Katherine Charlton discusses the musical style of new wave. There are many new way groups in the world, but Charlton only selected some of the most notable groups. Charlton divided these notable groups by American and British nationalities. In order to give equal attention to both sides, I have chosen four primary artists to represent new wave. We will begin with the Americans.
The vast blue ocean sits in peace; the water looking as if it is glass. Not a single ripple disturbs the tranquility of the bright blue ocean. Then instantaneously, without warning, a large destroyer ship that goes by the name of the USS Theodore E Chandler cuts through the ocean, sending large waves to roll for miles and miles. A single large wave sweeps with ease through the glassy water, disturbing the composure of the ocean. The wave starts extremely large, but over time it shall diminish to a single wavelet. As time goes on, the wave become less of its original form, yet it travels a journey. As the wave glides over the immense ocean, it will undergo many experiences, and challenges. Over time the wave will lessen to almost nothing, but from almost nothing another wave will emerge; taking a path of its own. The first wave will experience a great journey, gathering wisdom
I remember when my grandma and I went outside to play when I was about 4 years old. The sky was the most beautiful shade of blue you had ever laid your eyes on, like a crystal clear majestic ocean in the most exotic and breathtaking countries imaginable. We started with just a simple game of catch, however, throwing a blue and yellow Winnie the Pooh ball back and forth can get pretty old really fast. So we stopped playing catch and I skipped my way over, like most 4 year old girls did, to the slide. Now I had been down this slide no problem about a million times and so to think that something would go wrong this time, was just plain inconceivable to my four year old mind. How wrong I was. I started my descent up the red, thin, and metal ladder,
In this excerpt from The Sound of Waves, Yukio Mishima’s use of descriptive diction and imagery depicts the tumultuous island during the storm and helps the reader visualize the milieu and events of the passage. Bethany Hamilton Despite the devastating shark attack, Bethany Hamilton showed great resilience in achieving her surfing dream. Bethany Hamilton was a 13 year old girl with high hopes for her future. On one October day; actually the last day of October. Bethany was out searching for waves on the ocean with one of her friends Alana and also Alana’s brother and father. While Bethany was paddling to a nearby wave she just kind of stopped and floated on her surf board for a minute, when out of no where Bethany feels a tugging sensation on her arm.

Waves come and the waves go. With each wave comes a tremendous energy with which the wave rises, falls back and marches back to the sea. Gushing wind blowing over the sea gives ample encouragement of the waves.
In the book Star of the Sea, written by author Joseph O’Connor, he states “They had far more in common than either realised. One was born Catholic, the other Protestant. One was born Irish, the other British. But neither was the greatest difference between them. One was born rich and the other poor.” O’Connor summarises the idea of social class that has been a recurring idea since the dawn of time. Social classes is basically the division of society that is based on social and economic status. The people who were at the top of the social classes were thought to be the prestigious and most worthy people and the further you go down the chain the more common people you began to see. Many people demonstrate the social class system in literature. Shakespeare, especially, offers a challenge to what everyone thought they knew of the social class system.
