The Hollywood stars know the risk when discussing politics. Hollywood is a finicky place. It's where magic happens, but the behind the scenes stories of how movies come together are sometimes terrifying. Actors and actresses are chosen because of their talent, their dedication to the art and even how the public views them at any given moment. Perhaps that's why it's surprising to see so many celebrities offering their political views and taking sides with the candidates currently being nominated.

Gabrielle Dee Giffords, born June 8th, 1970, was a US representative from Arizona(2007 - 2012), and before her life changing experience in 2011 she was the youngest woman to be elected to the Arizona State Senate. Before she was elected into the House of Representatives she had sold her family’s tire business, El Campo Tire Warehouse, to Goodyear Tire. After making her way up to Arizona Senate, she resigned to run for US House of Representatives, and she was the third woman from Arizona to serve in the US House of Representatives.

Elizabeth Warren achieved many feats in office but also in her life before politics. Her first known recognition was during her high school years. While in high school, Elizabeth Warren was a well-known debater, earning the title “Oklahoma’s top high school debater” (“Elizabeth Warren”). Even during high school, teachers recognized her strengths. To be a debater, a person must have personality traits that are shown with this title. In order for Elizabeth Warren to receive this title, numerous people recognized her strengths not only as a debater, but as a person as well.

Superstars whether you discern it are among the leaders of this nation. Because of their fame, they are continually in the public eye; many people; especially children, and adolescents look up to them for what they should do. For instance, when Miley Cyrus published her “Wrecking Ball” song a teenager bounded on his school’s war monument of a hanging cannonball. He then swung on it, starkly. Besides the result of wanting to regurgitate, can you now see why what celebrities do are vital to our country.

American politics has always proved to be a difficult venue to measure success, there are limited amounts of numbers to quantify, and individual’s careers are often replaceable and short-lived in the face of controversy. In his book Outliers, Malcom Gladwell defines his version of success as his idea of an outlier: a man or women that does things out of the ordinary (Gladwell 17). Clinton, a political phoenix, is a woman who rises above the flames of politics and scandals. Hillary Clinton’s legacy exemplifies a successful outlier in American politics in multiple ways: by recreating a favorable public image after the infamous presidential affair, becoming electable and having a well-respected career in the Senate, humbly accepting the Secretary of State position from her former opponent soon after the devastating loss in the 2008 Democratic Primary, to persevering through the challenges of the State Department, and finally, to be considered the immediate 2016 Democratic Presidential nominee without formally announcing her decision.

Similar to how Queen Emma was portrayed, current female politicians are often also portrayed as cold, indifferent women unsuited for office. During the 2016 US Presidential Elections, candidate Hillary Clinton faced immense, sexist criticism from media, society, and President Trump himself. Clinton had been labeled a “nasty woman”, “untrustworthy”, and a “criminal” throughout her campaign. Many female politicians face similar sentiments and remarks. Think about it, with the way media plays these add all the time we tend to listen to celebrities that we really like. We will listen to what their opinions are, and lobbyist know this, (in this case the special interest groups.)

On the national level, no woman has ever been elected to the presidency or vice-presidency. Only once in the nation’s history has a major political party even nominated a women to the ticket. In 1974, Walter Mondale made New York Congresswoman Geraldine Ferraro his running mate. They lost in one of the worst routs in presidential election history. At the cabinet level, there have been 486 people to have headed a federal department, only 21 have been women, (Gendergap, p.2). The first woman cabinet secretary was Frances Perkins, President Franklin Roosevelt’s Secretary of Commerce, in 1933. Currently, there are three women running cabinet departments, Janet Reno the Attorney General runs the Justice Department, Donna Shalala is the head of Health and Human services, and Madelaine Albright is the secretary of State. Albright is the highest ranking woman in the history of the executive branch. The president is also responsible for the nominations of ambassadors. Helen Eugiene Moore was the first female American ambassador, when in 1949 she was assigned to the Danish Embassy. For the election of 2000, several prominent women have been mentioned as possible presidential or vice-presidential candidates.

Because of their fame, celebrities have an advantage when it comes to entering the political arena without experience. Perhaps the most successful example of this is Ronald Reagan. Reagan is widely known for his acting abilities but he makes the jump into the political world when he is elected as the Governor of California. This advancement allows for him to later go on to become President of the United States. In addition to Ronald Reagan, Arnold Schwarzenegger, of The Terminator, also has been elected as Governor of California despite having no background in politics. In the United States, we are going through a tough transition period. We are moving on from old energy to new energy and from conservative traditions to new ones. It is good to know that many in the country acknowledge the times with a belief of an inclusive America. In the same fashion, some celebrities speak out about racial issues that continue to divide out country as they fight for equality for all races. Our country is there yet, but individuals with huge platforms who use it to speak in favor of diversity, it can help our country get to that point. An influential figure can convince countless people to become more accepting of the changing country that becomes better for all Americans.

I believe her support for the community is especially outlined when she discusses her views on education. Vote-Smart writes, “Kirsten Gillibrand. Issue Position: Expanding Educational Opportunities for Our Children. "Kirsten Gillibrand is committed to reforming No Child Left Behind by providing additional funding for our schools, increasing local control and avoiding the practice of solely teaching to standardized tests. As a mother of two young sons, Congresswoman Gillibrand has been a strong advocate for increasing access to early childhood education programs.” Although she may not fully understand every conflict of a black male raised in Brooklyn, she seems to understand that access to education is very important for some of the students who are raised in lower income areas. Furthermore, I would personally support Gillibrand in her next election because she exhibits some of the same values and views as I do, such as being pro choice, and marriage equality. She is also becoming very experienced and she is a good representative of my community. One leadership quality that Gillibrand embodies is the ability to use her personal experiences to help her understand the people. In all of my research it shows that she connects the problems of the people with similar circumstances that she has dealt with in a maternal state. Vote-smart writes, “ "Like every parent, Kirsten wants her children to have access to quality schools, well-paid and well-equipped teachers, and a curriculum that prepares students for future challenges.” This reveals that she uses her kids to play upon the voters and her likeability.
